Afternoon all,

Over the last 2 years, as I approach my 50th, I have gone through quite a change in life outlook. It started with a very generous voluntary redundancy offer from our favourite midlands based manufacturer of SUVs, and then morphed again during the current Covid-19 situation with an understanding of how nice a simple, low spend life can be.

I have spent much time wondering what the world would look like if many of us opted out of significant consumerism. The loss of tax, the loss of jobs, the loss of economic productivity if we all decided to make cars/TVs/houses/etc. last longer, and chose to reduce our holiday/eating out/etc. spend.

This has also got me thinking about how the 'normal' materialist/consumerist economy truly works. If we are all out there producing, selling and buying goods - value is being created at each stage, which must surely mean the amount of theoretical money available in the country is growing every month. How is that total amount of money controlled, and by whom? What are the implications of getting that wrong?

Then my poor grey cells really explode when I try to scale that globally, with hundreds of economies.

Can anyone recommend any books to get my started on improving my knowledge in this area?

Martin.
