Can anyone help with the following problem:

The car runs perfectly o.k until suddenly the engine management light comes on and the throttle stops responding, the idle speed starts to vary fron 1000-2500 rpm and depressing the accelerator to the floor only results in an increase of 500 rpm or so. Sometimes the fault dissappears of its own accord but other times it stays, the previous low loader visit to the dealer resulted in them saying that they "re terminated a connection on the rear of the fuse panel" but I guess in reality it just cleared on its own again whilst they were checking as it has happened again. The car is back at the dealers now but this problem has been occuring on average once every week or so since I bought it (not always terminal) and is becoming slightly annoying to say the least.

Chris

Before starting engine, do you always wait until the various idiot lights have extinguished themselves ie after the various self checks have been completed? If not you should as this can cause intermittent probs.

Has anyone tried to steam clean the engine? I hope not as this can cause untold probs.

If above points not applicable then sounds that you either have a dirty lambda sensor or earthing resistance problems (battery - body - engine - management/ignition units - cooper coils retaining
bracket etc). In the former case, its a simple replacement whilst the latter needs a good and careful check over with an accurate multi-meter to ensure any resistance is very close to zero (ie single digit ohms).

mine did the same once at vmax. I disconnected the battery, waited 30 seconds & it was fine, never happened since

Could be a TPS (throttle position sensor) fault by the sounds of it.

never seen this before - but as Craig says try a full reset of the system by powering off an on again (disconnect the battery). Don't want to pay the dealer several hundred quid to do this for you!!!

I very much doubt it as the throttle circuitry is duplicated to provide a failsafe get-you-home mode at reduced power - The warning is flagged when the 2 circuits register differently. Restarting the engine effectively reboots the computer systems and your scenario would be immediately flagged the moment the throttle was touched.

The ocassional "Check engine" warning combined with sudden loss of power happens to most at some time or another and although dramatic, usually disappears after a restart or after isolating the battery as posted above. Persistent and regular warnings, however, do need investigating and are usually caused per my post above.

Sounds vaguely similar to something I had a while back. Took it into to egham, they couldn't find a fault but cleaned the throttle potentiomtors connections put it back and its been all good ever since.
