Starter bed Suppliers/Manufacturers
Discussion
gents,
As some of you know, Daisy the FrankenDuc is back into her pheonix mode, rising from the ashes of her previous incarnation.
part of the re-work is removing the starter motor, for a few good reasons
1. Weight of starter motor
2. Weight of battery
3. Weight of starter gears
4. Frailty of Sprag clutch
Weight is always a nice win but item 4 has been the main driver. She's running big compression, angry RS Cams and the sprag clutch is the weakest link in the chain. and a pain to replace as it requires the cases to be split. So, starter system is in the bin.
So, this leaves me needing a way to start the old girl.
Anyone jknow anyone who makes/seels starter beds? I can't use the MGP variant as i need ot use it on my own so I'm looking foir the twin roller bed type. I'll wire it so that it plugs into the bike and is triggered by the starter button so it's easier to use.
Ps, yes, I know about the clutch. I have the same pin locked clutch used in BSB so that's covered. Just need to spin the rear to get her to fire.
any tips??
Cheers

Ha ha, I think most of us here would actually be asking you about this type of thing! Anyway, I did a quick google and there's quite a few people here in Australia who make them....now that's something I didn't know.
Will you get an electric one? Running off battery or mains power?
mains as the tracks all have power available. Will you get an electric one? Running off battery or mains power?
I was thinking of designing one and using a grinder type motor but if something is readily available.....why re-invent the wheel

For 700 quid I really would be making my own! Crikey.
I'm looking into it. It's 750 quid, possibly plus VAT and shipping to the southern hemisphere......plus import duties.
So an easy grand.....
So I'll see. But this is a guaranteed backstop if the design & build route becomes umpossible....

I will say though, that the link I posted was the 1st one I found online. I only posted that link to confirm that that was the type of thing you were after. It's 750 quid, possibly plus VAT and shipping to the southern hemisphere......plus import duties.

£700+ is a bit salty, but I'm sure with a bit more digging something with an easier to swallow price tag might be out there?
Or the alternative is to weld some brackets to a paddock stand, bokt in the roller from a lawn roller, clag a 1/2" drive on the end of the roller and attach a cordless impact gun with a torque arm to it and a bent coat hanger to activate the trigger.
Ahhh yes, my 25 years in engineering have done me proud there I reckon.

That looks trick. Do you need knurled rollers?
He reckons the grip tape is sufficient. But we're looking at adding a toothed belt to the opposite side to drive the front roller. He's using his for a few bikes and they all fire up within a couple of revolutions.
And apparently this design he's got down to under 10kg.

Its mad how things work out sometimes isnt it?
Looks like your pal has made a canny decent job of his starter there too. That's a nice looking bit of kit.
He's the Director of the Engineering Dept for a large company and incredibly anal about things like this. Looks like your pal has made a canny decent job of his starter there too. That's a nice looking bit of kit.
His banshee 485 engined RS250 is a work of art, the attention to detail incredible.
I know (he won't admit it) that this is probably his 4th or 5th iteration!!
We're aloso discussing now a toothed belt option to make it a twin drive.... he did this on a previous build and reckons it'll be a doddle.
