My brother has fitted m2 carbon mirrors to his m240i.

It does actually look really good, but at the same time, I cant help but feel its akin to putting a gti badge on an se.

It is a bit council isn't it? Brutal replies so that I can forward this thread on. biggrin

Its always been the case - people put the bits on from the top end car on models a bit further down.

When i'd my first car we were putting Cooper bits on our Minis.

Relative to your badge reference - its not. Hes not putting an M2 badge on it, just different mirrors. I've seen worse crimes.

People have been putting M mirrors on non M cars since the days of the E36 M3, when the first of the M model only mirrors came out - 28 years ago.

As with non - M cars carrying ///M badges (Not M2,3,4,5,6 bit just the ///M badge), the snobby fuss made about it by some is, in my opinion, a bit pathetic.

You think your Brothers car looks a bit "council"? ( calling it "council" tells us pretty much where you're coming from on the snob-scale) - Tough s#it! - It's his car not yours!

One of the biggest problems with far too many BMW owners is, they are just far too far up their own ar$e$ about BMW's!

They have to have their hierarchy, and look down on people with "lesser" models than their own.

Then they have to look down at those who have fewer options, or cheaper options, than they have on their own car.

They look down on people because they have ///M badges on a car that isn't an M2,3,4,5,6 (and all too often, are completely ignorant of the fact that BMW themselves actually fit ///M badges to non - M cars - Such as the E30 325i Sport ).

Now you want to rally the snobby owners, and gather loads of "brutal" comments looking down on people like your Brother, for having M-style mirrors on a non - M car, so you can put him down? - FFS!

I bet you used to take the pi$$ out of the kids at school with you, who wore Hi-Tec trainers because their families couldn't afford Nike or Adidas! rolleyes

You want "brutal" comments? - Okay, here goes:

I've owned BMW's since 1987, some new and immaculate, and some old and a bit rough around the edges, but all serviced by my local BMW dealership, and the worst part about owning all of them has been, having to put up with snobby tw4t's, looking down their noses at other owners - Feel free to pass that on to your Brother! smile

I don’t see the fuss either but then again I’ve done it too.

My car is white so the stock silver canards and mirrors looked crap, so I swapped them both for black ones. Outside of the weird forum snobbery people seem to like the mirrors.

Don’t forget that the OG M2 didn’t even get then and it’s original engine was a breather on N55 shared with the M1/235i. The M style mirrors came with the comp revision. Is it also a ‘crime’ for OG owners to fit M mirror caps given that their cars don’t have true M engines etc?

On many cars over the years i've added "upgrade" bits from cars further up the range, in fact with my e90 330i SE i got a set of 17 inch M Sport rims to upgrade from the rather dull looking 16 inch SE ones it was running on.

CSL rims on an M3 seem a common upgrade too.

I've seen Z4 Coupes running Z4M rims too.

All seems fairly normal IMHO

I don't see the issue really.

Manufacturers produce lots of aftermarket accessories that draw upon their racing heritage and such like. And they often make the car much more aesthetically pleasing.

I would draw the line at plastering, say, M2 badges all over a 218d, and stuff like that.

At the end of the day, the randomer on the street is going to think the car looks nicer/more sporty and that's it. The people who matter, i.e. PHers and other petrol heads will know what the car is anyway, irrespective of whatever aftermarket kit has been fitted.

Obviously, this is a bit of banter, some of the replies above are a bit cringe. biggrin

I have never understood why people spend money making their car worse, big turbo over a big wing for me!

Theres a time and a place for both IMHO.

Our M140i will at some point get tuned to close to 400BHP, but is fine for now @ 340BHP. TBH it doesnt feel that much slower in a straight line than the 380BHP A45 it replaced.

Our 330i is our runabout. With 258BHP its fine as is, but i want it to look well, so a wheel upgrade (and a bumper upgrade as the other one was damaged and an M Sport bumper used was the same price as repairing the one that was on it) is all it needed really. Any sort of engine upgrade would be silly expensive. If i want more power we'll just replace the car.

Pic for posterity, you can let me know if you think this looks worse than a typical 2006 330i.

Purists may not like it, but it's not like sticking M badges all over a non-M!

I swapped the kidney grilles with grey slats on my previous Z4 Coupe for ones with black slats as I thought they looked better, and replaced the wheels with a set off an E89 Z4.

I've just fitted a set of E89 wheels to my 3 Series because they look better.

And my current Z4M Coupe has 19" CSL replica wheels instead of the original "M" wheels, which I prefer. It also has matt black kidney grilles which I really like.

If it's your car why not have it how you like it? And who cares what other people think anyway?

Don’t tell anyone but my 2003 Alpina B3S has M3 mirrors fitted at factory 😀 I think they look much better.

As long as he isn’t mis-badging it. Go for it 😊

its his car, no rules

Anyone offended at an M badge on a 320d needs to have a word with themselves IMO.

M mirrors were on option on a couple of non M cars back in the 1990's.

You used to see them on top end 8 series and E36 328i sport. My E36 had them ordered from new at a £500 cost. As BMW were reluctant to sell the mirrors for other cars the aftermarket blossemed with M3 mirrors!

If they are OEM I do not see any problem.
