My New Accord Type R (PIC HEAVY)
Discussion
Hi guys.
Been lurking on here for a few years now and thought id start a little thread now i've bought something fairly interesting.
So here it goes, my first car was a 1.3 Yaris Colour Collection on just shy of 140k (still ran like a dream!)
Nearly 30k later, the black yaris was given to my sister and i was quite into my yaris's by then so i decided to buy a t sport. Always wanted a blue one and after checking every possible for sale page about a million times one came up for sale.

After just over a year with the t sport it was time to buy something a bit faster. Will definitely miss the little t sport, its been such a fun car and so reliable.
I debated buying a lot of cars, i originally wanted a ukdm dc2 however they were getting more and more expensive and finding a decent one was really hard. Another big factor is insurance as i've only just turned 20 so importing one wasn't an option unfortunately. finally started looking at accord type r's and after viewing a couple of bad examples, i found a nice Milano red one on gumtree. Went up to Long bridge to go and view it. Had a little drive in it and had my first experience of vtec and just like that the deal was done. Here she is.

Its a facelift 52 plate accord type r on 114k. Its got a few nice bits like a gruppe m intake and 4-2-1 mani. The underneath is clean with little rust which is good, mot history is really clean aswell. Cambelt is actually being done tomorrow as the guy i bought it off had no record of it being done.
This weekend was my first with the car so decided to give it some love.

Then i gave the headlights a well needed polish.

The car will be machined polished in the near future as it is going pink in places. After the headlights i changed the oil, filter and plugs.

Gave the car a good drive afterwards, gotta say this car is incredible. Its so fun and vtec comes in like a rocket. Its so planted however im yet to take it on any decent roads. Id read so many reviews on these cars and everyone says how good they are and now i totally get it.
Then a mate of mine gave me some new bulbs for the side lights and number plate lights.

And here's a little pic of the atr next to the little t sport (which is currently for sale if anybody is interested!)

That's all for now but will update thread if anyone cares to read it haha! will also be getting some better shots once the weather gets good again on my big camera.
cheers.

Looks a great example, congrats on finding one!
I got my first one of these in a similar predicament, I was 19 and having already been a massive Jap/Honda fan I wanted an upgrade from my 1.4 EK. ATR was one of the only Jap performance cars I could insure at that age, so kinda ended up with one by chance. I've since had 5 and still have the first and last!
Don't be feeling like you've got the short straw with it - people with other Hondas overlook these thinking they're too big and heavy, in truth they're a brilliant bit of engineering, the likes of which we'll never see again. They're fantastic. I assume you've not done many miles in it if you've just got it, but you should really enjoy it. Absolute gem of an engine, aggressive LSD and absolutely exquisite steering feel.
They do have their share of problems though, you should pull the carpet back above the pedals and check the bulkhead, very common rust spot. Nearly all of them will suffer here but you do get the odd freak one that's mint. It has written many of these off over the years (including 3 of mine) but if the rest of the car is solid it's worth fixing. Both the ones I currently own have rust here, but are otherwise solid, so they're keepers.
Enjoy it!

these are a very under-rated performance car, drive it normally and its horrible, and not nice on the motorway as only 5 gears and horrible inside.
However, take it down your favourite B road or round somewhere like cadwell park and give it a good thrashing and its incredible what it can do, like a 4 door Integra type R DC2.

I had one of these, and it blew me away. It was the most fun car I ever owned. I think too many dismissed it without even a test drive because it was a boring looking saloon. However, take it down your favourite B road or round somewhere like cadwell park and give it a good thrashing and its incredible what it can do, like a 4 door Integra type R DC2.
I have to disagree on a couple of points, it was perfectly competent driving normally, and it wasn't horrible on the motorway either, in terms of noise. 6th gear would have been nice to have but I could live without it.

One thing OP - ensure you change the tensioner with the belt. I don't know if things improved but my tensioner died early, odd whirring noise but fortunately the belt didn't jump. Drove for some while before I got around to it. With hindsight somewhat of a risky ploy!

Cheers for the the reply, believe I follow you on insta. Are you the lucky git with the black pearl aerodeck vti-s? I did have a look at the bulkhead through the arch liner aswell and as far as I can see there's little to no rust. Tbh the reason i wanted one was because it was something abit different and I can get all my mates in the car if we ever go anywhere and i have to say i am definitely not disappointed with my choice, alot of people my age are driving fiesta St's which just bore me tbh so im glad I've got something unique. Me and the missus want to do a euro trip next year and the atr will be perfect for it. I think its great on the motorway, lovely and smooth compared to the little t sport that does about 4k rpm at 70. Mpg isn't the best but tbh its so worth it, everytime i go in vtec I forget about it haha. I do need to learn how to drive the thing tho as I'm changing gears at the wrong time haha! I'm completely with rasps on day to day useability. I found the suspension & VTEC a perfect balance for comfy bimbling & enthusiastic hooning. I was in the market for an Impreza or a Type R and I chose the latter. VTEC was as expected but the chassis was not. It was so tight and nimble for a relatively large car.

Sorry for the a separate reply, trying to get my head round how this forum works still haha. Have to agree, going to and from work its great. I dont go far only about 10 miles to my work if that, but its such a nice drive when out of vtec. Still can't quite believe its mine tbh. Okay didnt know that! Will call my mechanic now to see if he had already planned on changing it. Thanks! One thing OP - ensure you change the tensioner with the belt. Also suggested in PH buying guide is the water pump. Can't comment on that
A couple of ownership tips to repeat:
Check the oil. Especially if using the revs. Keep a topup pack in the car for that euro trip!
Front tyres (especially) can wear unevenly, inner edges IIRC. It's partly a "feature" of the chassis but can be exacerbated by incorrect tracking settings. If you haven't then get it fully checked, essential if you've just forked out on new rubber

Yep that's me, any £1500 Honda and I'm in
Yeah you need to keep on top of the rot, tbh I don't take mine out in winter at all as the salt will just destroy it! See my thread for a demo of how bad these things can get! https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
Yeah they're very much the forgotten Type-R but it's for no good reason tbh, they're brilliant. We took mine to Germany last year and did a lap of the Ring, it did overheat towards the end of the lap so make sure your cooling system is in perfect condition (alloy radiator and maybe an oil cooler are a good start, I've got an alloy rad to go on mine) Other than that it was the perfect tool for the job, nice and comfy to do 600 miles in a day. Disagree with the people saying they're no good to drive normally, the ride is firm yes, but its well damped and not crashy over bumps. Mine did 400 miles to a tank on the way back, filled up at the Nurburgring and got past London before needing fuel, and that was sitting at 80+ the whole way (and 140 for a short while)
It's bloody difficult to keep it in VTEC from 2nd to 3rd, but it can be done, and it's mega satisfying when you get it right, you need to change just as it's about to hit the limiter, and make it a fairly quick change too.

Just had a read through and now I'm terrified that I'm gunna find some rot somewhere :/ I paid just under what you were offered for yours, it does have some decent mods tho so that's why I justified paying good money for it aswell as the clean underneath/bulkhead The underside seem very clean with only a little rust starting which im gunna keep on top of. Im hoping to get a daily for the winter and put the accord away. How much is it usually for the bulkhead to be done?

Nice car. Always looked for a mint Accord Type R but could never find one. However, take it down your favourite B road or round somewhere like cadwell park and give it a good thrashing and its incredible what it can do, like a 4 door Integra type R DC2.

I was in two minds about posting about the rot as I didn't want to scare you about your new purchase, but at the same time it's something you really need to be aware of on these cars. I was told a ballpark figure of £1000 for the bulkhead on my S reg, I didn't get it done though as I started taking the dash out to reduce the labour cost and kinda lost motivation. My V reg also needs it doing, tbh I don't expect it to be as much as £1000 as it's not bad, of course, depends how bad it is. If you do have rot there, make sure whoever fixes it is going to do a proper job of cutting it out and welding to good metal rather than just simply plating over it. Depending on where you are, I'd recommend VTEC Direct, I'm lucky in that I live 5 minutes from them, but they are the most experienced people in the world with these cars, having been working on them since they weren't far out of warranty period. They also race them in various race series.I really do hope it's solid, it's rare to find one that hasn't suffered but they do exist.

Had a look at there is a patch thats been filled however its not big and doesn't look very bad and hasn't gone through to the wheel arch side nor has it gone up the seem, I'm yet to find out if its been welded then filled but doesnt look like it. Going to take the scuttle off and have a better look when I have time. Luckily I know a good welder if It has to come to that. Whats the bulkhead like on your current one? Defo don't want to see mine being broken as I'm already so attached haha!I really do hope it's solid, it's rare to find one that hasn't suffered but they do exist.

My current one had a scab on it when I bought it, I've been meaning to get it cut out and welded up for 3 years but its out of sight and out of mind.... This is not the correct attitude
I'll be 100% getting it fixed rather than letting the car get broken, and tbh I really need to get it done asap as the sooner it's sorted the better, and I'd suggest you don't bury your head in the sand like I've done
Values of the cars are only going up, so a proper repair will be a good investment as it'll be pretty much unsellable if a buyer spots filler in the bulkhead. That said I can't see myself selling either of mine unless I really have to!

Dont suppose anyone knows where I can get a ballast for it? My drivers side headlight doesnt work. Struggling to find anything online.

I love the Accord Type R. I had one for 9.5 years. The seats are amazing and I don't know why people say it is terrible on long journeys. I'm now in a BMW 340i and miss the fun of the old Honda. As for getting hold of any parts, I always used to go to Andy and Ben at VTEC Direct. They have all the knowledge and know where to get hold of everything for these cars.
Enjoy the car. I sold mine at 178,000 miles and it was thrashed daily. Just let it warm up and learn where the rev limiter is.
