I've been through a couple of maverick twin probe thermometers now and they aren't the most stable.

What do other people recommend? Ideally more than two probes, waterproof and remote (wireless either WiFi or Bluetooth). There's a load that look like crappy Chinese options so id really appreciate a recommendation?

I can't make a recommendation but this guy is good with reviews.

I have is cookbook, nice balance of science and cooking which I like. A bit like Kenji Lopez alt and Serious eats.

Meater is excellent:

https://meater.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjww_f2BRC-ARIsAP3z...

The probe takes both the ambinet temp of the bbq or oven, and the internal temp of the meat. You use an app to tell it what you're cooking and how you want it done, and it tells you how long it will take, and alerts you when it's ready. You can also set alerts if the ambient temp goes above or below temps that you set.

I have a maverick 2 probe wireless and the MEATER block.

I tend to use the maverick loads less (mainly just for BBQ grill temp whilst I don’t have food in it) the MEATER is my go to.

I also want to get a therma pen for that instant read and that is where the MEATER is lacking as you need to set it up to get the readings

I also use the combination of a Meater and a Thermapen.

I found that moving the phone more than a metre or so from the BBQ, the probe loses signal. However, by putting the Meater app on my Ipad, I can watch proceedings from inside while the cooking is happening. On Saturday night, during a rain shower, the phone was in a plastic bag by the Weber.

The Meater app indicates when to remove from heat and to begin resting the meat. I've found that it tends to allow the internal temperature of the meat to overshoot the target temperature by a few degrees. However, this truly is a "First-World Problem", and I would recommend the Meater to the OP.

I’m guessing you only have the standard probe and not the block or the range +.

As the unit itself acts as the bridge to the MEATER Cloud stuff

Yes, it’s the basic Meater: Xmas present from one of my “children”. Very pleased with it - and the Thermopen is quite old but keeps on working.

I was a kickstarter backer and it took over three years for them to get it working.

TBH I was expecting them to go bust

Didn't realise it was a Kickstarter project. Bought the Pro version last year - I've three probes but it can take eight!

Wifi and/or bluetooth. Generally works well but drops out on occasion. I'm not looking to replace.

App's good. Loads of presets (albeit no real value here as you can set your own...), charts and alarms.

I find the charts useful to remind me which direction any deviation of temperature is going in.

Battery life (rechargeable) is great - lasts easily beyond an 18hour cook.

Not meaning to sound rude or offensive fella , but using a phone and I-pad to barbie is tragic , akin to people using automated pellet fed smokers , zero skill or satisfaction involved .

All the Pros use temperature probes. The MEATER just uses your phone to display the read out.

What this allows you to do is on a 12 hour cook to leave the side of the BBQ.

My theory is I am sometimes spending up to 100 quid on meat (Christmas dinner this year) and I want it to come out perfect and if that makes me a lesser BBQ’er then so be it.

If I was using that as an argument we shouldn’t even be using a BBQ. Everything should be done on open fire!

fttm, you have been unsuccessful in not meaning to sound rude and offensive, especially as the subject of the thread is "meat thermometers".

I was given this Meater as a Christmas present and it seemed that it was worth a try. However, I have managed to BBQ without one for the past 40 years or so

Thank you for that. A bit of lock-down grumpiness on my part there. All the best smile
