I have a set of a Cup2s on my 991.2 GT3 that need changing in the next few weeks, and I'm considering putting PS4S on it. Probably 90% road use and 10% track so far, although obviously 100% road right now.

Does anyone have any experience of PS4S on a GT3? (Chris Harris seems to rate them...)

Thanks!

Not had much first hand experience, but I have a trusted friend who’s run SuperSports and then more recently 4S on his for years. He think they’re great. They warm up more easily, ride a touch softer and cope with colder conditions better. The only downside is that they’d overheat on track. But keep sessions under 15mins and you’d probably be fine.

MP4Ss are totally superior to Cup 2s for all aspects of road driving when cold and/or wet..I have fitted a new set to my Ferrari and they are magic in the wet/cold..They supposedly overheat too easily during hard track driving so need to do shorter stints as already mentioned..I intend to fit MP4Ss on my 991.2GT3 RS next Autumn to avoid another mishap like i had in the snow in February.

Thanks both. Best case scenario would be two sets of wheels with Cup2s for track, but my wife is insisting that two new bathrooms is a higher priority...

Interesting discussion - have been wondering about doing the same on my 991.1 GT3 when the time comes.

No question that Cup2's are far superior in the dry on track but with a trip to Spa and the RIng (really any time of the year!) I'd far rather hedge by bets on MPS4S and compromise on ultimate dry weather pace as a trade for the confidence of running whatever the weather.

I have recently put a set of 4S's on my Cayman GTS and they are very impressive - have Supersports on other cars and they're just a good.

Not sure whether Porsche would have an issue with 4S's on the GT3 given it wasn't OE spec?

Why? I did Bedford Autodrome on Saturday. Tracks are open now.

My “winter wheels” for my 991.2 GT3 arrive next month and this is precisely what I’ll be doing. They’re not a frippery is a necessity for safe use of the public highway....

A pissing contest, where function (safety when it's pissing down) wins over form (prettier pissing rooms).

I have them on my 997.1 4s but I believe they will be good for about 3 laps of a track before going greasy (from reading only) and that you need Cups for the track.
Im looking to get another set of wheels and put Nanking AR1 or Toyo r888r s on them for the track. These are cheaper than the Michellins and will do 4-6 track days.

In terms of lifespan PS4S are good for at least 100 laps of the Nurburgring Nordschleife according to the guy that runs Apex (they run them on their M3 taxi). That would be a lot of single laps (rather than sustained use) but it is a long lap.

Taffy. What sort of road mileage only would you expect to get from MP4Ss? Thinking of a set for my 981 GTS.

Seems like a compromise is needed. One new bathroom, one set of wheels.

My MPS4S lasted less than 3 track day’s on my 991.2gt3, by the afternoon of the 3rd Track day the cords were showing on the fronts and rears were well battered, the fronts were also switched after the 1st day to even wear.

Short sessions and tyre pressures were adhered to over them 3 day’s too.

I can’t drive for toffee either so its not an result in me pushing car and tyres to the limit.
if you cannot drive very well to a high level with all PSM off, it's maybe that which kills your tyres, understeering into bends on a road bias geo and letting electrics sort the car out kills fronts.
many use PS4S on the ring due to bad weather and they can do >100 laps no issue.

goto any track day and most noobs have bent and over heated front tyres and very hot rear brakes., its easy to see the cars driven bad on track and then visit them In the pits and look at the sorry state of the tyres and brakes !!!. more so as it happends in PDK cars.

You may find 991.2 GT3 is not yet on the approved list for N0 PS4S. This could affect warranty issues. Worth checking first.

MPS4S was on road bias / stock geo and total novice.

Now on Cup2s with set up via JCR, still a novice..

Have been doing Short sessions no more than 5/6 laps then min of 2 cool down laps without touching brakes, even went into car park at Donny on Monday and drove around cooling car without using brakes.

Was around 2.0bar hot all around all afternoon after first out lap each session , started day at 1.7bar cold in the morning....not sure where that is to the track gurus but felt ok and pressures consistent all day..

Ta.

Anyone who saw Chris Hoy at Oulton in March will verify how quick PS4S are..

You will enjoy your car more of the time with them on. Warm dry days aside.

Lowndes is indeed correct, well worth checking with your Porsche Centre first if extended warranty is planned. My 991.2 GT3 was in last week for 2 year service and warranty extension, the original Dunlops were worn and I asked for P4S as a replacement. They checked and, while the P4S is N0 rated and can be used on other Porsches, it's not on the Porsche approved list for the GT3.

The GT3 list at the moment is the Dunlop or the Cup 2, hopefully the P4S will appear on the list in the future but my Porsche Centre couldn't confirm that (although they did say the P4S was a very good tyre).

Why did you extend your warranty ? It’s not due for another year if it’s a two year warranty.

The point about warranty is a good one. One of the reasons that having two sets of wheels is good smile From what I know Porsche don’t retrospectively homologate tyres so PS4S may not ever be allowed under warranty. Certainly the case with 997’s there are much better tyres now than what’s N rated.

Yes, I think you're right about 2 sets of wheels being the ideal solution!

I extended the warranty now as they included the 111 point check with the 2 year service, the next warranty renewal will coincide with the 4 year service and so on.....

I run a 991.2gt3 and have swapped from cup2’s to 4s’s. Definitely a good move for me. Occasional track use but plenty of road use in all weathers. 4s’s are great.
Got Porsche to fit them and they didn’t say a word about warranty.
