Hi all,

Im looking to buy a car tonight for the O/H. car is 150 miles away, has a personalised registration which the current owner naturally wants to keep.

He said he will put the original VRM on the car today, and send relevant forms off to change it back but im sure thats wrong (and also ends up with me leaving with a car with no v5c new keeper supplement and also, a car with a VRM that doesnt exist (yet) so to speak.

I have purchased a car like this previously and im sure i left with the car (and personalised vrm), with log book sent off in my name with personalised vrm.

Then the old keeper sends the paperwork off to transfer the personalised vrm to his new car. he then texts me when its done and i put the original vrm plates back on.

Am i right, wrong?

If he did the reg change online today he should get the new V5 this week from DVLA. Assuming no Covid effect?

Otherwise you are correct, there will be no V5 sections for you with the new VRM, he would be giving you them with the old VRM.

Not sure I'd proceed until there is a valid V5 with the new VRM. Your call really.

The danger from his side if he left the personal plate on the car, it becomes yours as it goes with the car. He would have to trust you to do the transfer. I wouldn't do that personally.

Thanks for the info.

I guess my other concern is leaving without any bit of the v5c.

Then you wait for the owner to get the new v5 back. I think you cannot even do the sale using the online DVLA thingy, as you will need the V5 Document Reference, which will not be the same as the current V5. You happy to wait a week or so?

I thought that might be the case. He has someone coming to see it on Sunday.

Ideal scenario would be he waits to remove private plate, does deal tonight with me, i drive away, when v5c comes back we can do the transfer of plate then.

I just don't get it why people leave this till the last minute! When I put my car up for sale, I am ready for the buyer to drive it away.

Not sure what the current status at DVLA is but during lockdown, it took them about 6 weeks to come back with a new V5C when I sent it in to change the address. So, you could end up in a situation where you are unable to drive the car as you cannot tax it without the new V5C.

I think really, your options are:
1) Pay a deposit, ask seller to take number off and then go pick it up once it is done but you could be waiting a long time.
2) Do the sale on the existing number and then apply for the number to removed. The seller will have to trust you and maybe a small deposit until you have sent the number back gives him some comfort.
3) Find another car so you don't have to do all this messing about because the seller couldn't have been ar$ed

I totally agree. I usually disregard any car that has a vanity plate. But this one is very highly spec'd and the O/H has her heart set on it.

Seller removed the plate online an hour ago, before i got chance to speak to him, he now see's the error of his ways.

I think option 1 is the only option.

Strangely, it's now showing as the 14 plate (original plate) as being taxed, and the private plate doesn't exist.

Earlier today, after the private plate was put on retention, the private plate was showing as still taxed and the 14 plate couldn't be found.

Very strange that the 14 plate is now showing as being taxed.

Not strange, the swap on the DVLA side of things is instant. The slow bit is waiting for the new DocRef, which is on paper. You can't get the DocRef online anywhere, can you?

No, I don't believe so.
FWIW I completed the DVLA form at 2pm Weds and the new V5 came through this morning, so no COVID effect on turnaround when completing online.

The strange element is the fact the 14 plate reg, thats been dormant for 2 years, suddenly is showing as taxed, when the same DVLA page states that tax isn't transferable.

When you put a plate on retention the RFL status moves over.

Yeah that seems to be the case, shame DVLA said otherwise yesterday, because I could of got the car then. No worries, hopefully the v5c comes back soon as others have said so I can get myself down south to collect the car

Not sure what you mean by this? Why would that have meant you could collect the car sooner? It'd be unwise to buy a car without the full V5 for the correct number plate.
