But personally I wouldn’t bother. It’s as shocking as the previous version.

Still no SMB v2 or 3 support. They’ve only had 14 years to implement that.

iOS software still lousy UI.

Desktop software still massively restricted in functionality.

Sonos must be one of the only products I’ve owned that gets worse with each release. A shame really.

I'm one of those with a mix of older and newer products (they call the old ones "Legacy").

As such I'll be sticking with S1 until something forces me to make a decision one way or another (eg. one breaks, or service I used stops working).

Well fk you sonos. Used to use my SiriusXM subscription but it disappeared from the services list. The only way to get it back is to move to S1. Update the app and now my connects both need an upgrade. Upgrade crashes half way through and everything is not recognized.

Yup. Everything is fked. I’ve tried connecting to an existing system. I’ve tried setting up a new one. It just keeps failing by saying random error messages. It clear it is talking to the amps because the lights react but doesn’t complete.

I am so pissed off right now and it’s obvious they are setting me up for forced obsolescence. Assuming I’m going to not be made an idiot again, what is a viable alternative to Sonos connect amps?

Well, Sonos do have a new ‘amp’ at some insane price which will control a pair of ‘normal’ speakers and a couple of pairs of wireless sonos devices plus a sub. And has hdmi. Dunno more than that though. There is also a new connect replacement and various funky speakers.

All looks nice but there is a hefty sonos tax to pay. And I say that as an Apple user!

I’m back up and running but only after resetting everything to factory and creating a new account. Even then, it took multiple run through to get each component working.

For years I wouldn’t consider Sonos because I thought of them as expensive small speakers. It was only when I bought a house with Sonos connect amps that I started using them.

But, I need to move on now because Sonos have drawn a line and forced me to one side of it. I can’t buy anything of theirs new without replacing everything. Yes I could run 2 apps but that defeats the whole house purpose of Sonos. A friend has 6 connect amps, there’s no way he will buy another product. By making this move, Sonos have made it so I can’t buy their products to expand my system. If the amps got to a reasonable age and started to fail, I’d buy a new version and do a rolling upgrade. Well, I can’t do that now.

All or nothing. “I’d like a slice of nothing please”.

I’m going to have to find an alternative. I don’t mind buying all new from another vendor because I’m investing in their platform. I don’t want to buy all new from the same vendor because I’m already on their platform and they have artificially fked me.

On the other hand, there might suddenly be a whole host of second-hand gear available at a low price and the old app will remain updated for a decent while, just no more features etc.

But yeah, it's irritating that they did this. I can see why as the old gear was underpowered for what they want to do moving forward but it's a shame they couldn't come up with some form of bridge device to connect the old and new hardware to a single network in some way.

They are offering discounts on new gear but this has left a sour feeling with a lot of people. Especially those running mixed systems - I'm lucky that all my gear is still supported but I know of many people who have been shafted to a greater or lesser extent.

I am just staying with S1. I have playbar, sub, 2x play:1s as a 5.1 setup, a couple of other play:1s and then a Play:5 and Connect that are not compatible with S2.
S1 does everything I want it to do. Unlike others I find it works really well, although I did have a problem adding a Play:1 a few years ago. Had a call back from the USA, they remoted in and fixed it very quickly.
If I buy anything new that needs S2 (Arc most likely upgrade) then I will retire the Play:5 and Connect and move things around.
If anything else becomes obsolescent then I will consider my options.

Took me most of yesterday afternoon to get everything back.
Saw upgrade was available, started it off and the end result was S1, with rooms randomly disappearing and reappearing, speakers not responding etc.
While Sonos were dealing with my tweet to help (they're usually quite quick tbh) I noticed another upgrade was available which this time loaded S2.
Needed to re-add my surrounds and do the usual (for me) restart my router with the beam powered off, but that seemed to do trick.

Think in next house, Sonos will be replaced....

I have just upgraded to the S2 app and it worked without any issues. I was actually having problems with a couple of my Sonos one speakers as they were stuttering now and again but the firmware upgrade seems to have sorted this now.

Slight off topic - GF has brought her Amazon Echo to the house full of Sonos. I know I can get the Echo to 'take instructions to play' the sonos, but can I also get the Amazon Echo to be part of the Sonos sound system ?

I've been googling, but cant see how. all it says is add the skills to the Alexa.

TIA

Not unless you get a Sonos One, which has Alexa built in (or Google Assitant if you choose that option).

First I've heard of this is this thread, although I did wonder why the SONOS app on my phone now says S1. So looking at the SONOS compatibility page on S2, it suggests that my 2x Play3's (in a stereo pair) and the PlayBar are supported. However I have a Bridge which I understand is (or was?) required to group speakers together e.g. a 2.1 or 5.1 setup, a stereo pair etc. If I was to switch to S2 then would that break the stereo pairing or does that just work without a Bridge nowadays?

The odd thing is it says not all of my system is compatible, but yet, all of the individual items are on the 'Approved' list...

I had the same problem. Update the S1 controller app to the latest version, then let it run an update on your Sonos speakers. After that, the S2 upgrade should work. All your devices need to be on the latest firmware for the upgrade.

You've not needed the bridge since 2015 - https://www.smarthomesounds.co.uk/blog/faqs/do-i-n...

I didn't bother removing mine as it was happily still working, but I upgraded the other day so now it's been retired, everything else worked fine Play 1's and Play 3 etc
