Diesel Vs Petrol

Good Afternoon,
Due to the Covid carry on I'm in a bit of a predicament, I currently have a 2011 MX5 on 83k miles which I have up for sale, due to the amount of miles I'm going to be doing in the near future.
I work in Essex but live in Scotland, I usually fly up and down and leave my MX5 in Essex, have my old T4 in Scotland for running about, camping trips etc.
Occasionally I'd give the mx5 a run up and back down but after doing the trip a couple of times recently, I'm looking for something a bit better on fuel and something more comfortable BUT can still have a bit of fun on the B-Roads, budget can stretch to 15k.
My T4 is a rusty wreck and I'll be selling that later in the year, so needing a car that will fit the bill with most things (runs to the tip, camping gear, get a dog in, bit of fun, decent on fuel) is there a car that ticks all these boxes?
I have been looking at Golf GTD estate or Seat Leon FR, however I find them a bit "meh" and also I once had a E90 320d which was terribly unreliable, don't know what the story is with newer diesels.
My MX5 I can get about 35mpg on a run, I've been reading conflicting reports on diesels, that more modern petrols can get quite close to economy on a run. Also reading that diesels are going out of fashion. I've yet to try a decent diesel but apart from my scrapheap challenge T4 I've not drove one in years.
I'm changing my mind everyday & I'm getting sick of looking at auto trader etc 😂

If you want to do big miles get a modern Diesel.
Last year I did 28000 miles in a 2016 BMW 530d. 41mpg average and 90% of that driving was A road.
My wife did 24000 miles in a 2017 BMW 320d (X-Drive). 51mpg average and 90% of that was on Motorway.
Petrol can't come close.
If mileage is under 15000 mile a year then the extra servicing and parts costs of a modern complex Diesel out weigh the savings over Petrol.
I now do 6000 miles a year of B road and have a Petrol Mini Cooper S.
