Plucked up the courage to do the service, found a lot of oil in the belly pan - degreased and cleaned everything, took it for a spin and the leak is definitely coming from here.
Above my skills, but so i don't sound like an idiot at the garage is this just the engine cover?

2005 honda fireblade

Its on the right hand side, definately not the clutch casing - looks to be the pipe in the top

Its the generator/stator cover isn't it?, the pipe going into the top will probably be part of the wiring loom.

Stator cover.
Top bit is the 3 AC wires coming out that end up in the reg/reg.

The stator doesn't run in oil, so if it's definitely coming from there, it'll be leaking past the crank seal into the stator housing.

Pop the cover off and have a good poke around....

There shouldn't be any oil in there.. it's the generator.

If you don’t have oil in there you have a much bigger problem than if you do.

There absolutely is oil in there.

If you take the case off a new gasket would be a good idea as you may fix one problem and create another.

Thanks! Will order a gasket and take it off - does appear to be coming out of where the cable goes in though

well, you learn something new every day..

But the exit aperture for the generator AC wires doesn't look like a seal type??

New gasket, plus some liquid gasket where the cable goes through the cover should see it sorted.

So there are aftermarket gaskets - lead time of 8weeks or so, put it looks like most people use a liquid gasket for the whole thing.

Not managed to find a uk supplier yet

Owner of CBR600rr here, yes there is oil inside the stator cover, there is no need for an aftermarket gasket, use this instead:

Normally the wiring will be in a moulded rubber mount that has grooves the cover slides into. Common that the rubber goes hard, so a (very small) bead of RTV helps too.

My 600rr didnt have an actual gasket and the manual recommended 'hondabond' liquid gasket.

Threebond 1207b is apparently identical just branded differently.

I wasn't aware of that either so I've learnt something new today too.
