Hot hatch that also deals with family duties?

Hello... big stage in my life, just bought my first house (upgrading from a flat) also means a driveway for the first time!
The house is close to work. Close enough that me and the missus are considering going down to one car. We have two kids currently, and are planning to try for another at some stage. I was worried this would mean a 7 seater beast, but after researching this amazing thing: https://multimac.com it seems like we could do with a regular hatch back
Obviously one car would mean I'd want something fun too. The missus has said I cannot modify, which I'll find very hard! But, that she's happy to have anything sporty as long as I pay for the extra insurance lol (she couldn't care less about cars)
So, criteria:
Preferably a hatch back
Preferably 2014+
Preferably manual, but only because I've never tried DSG - I'm willing to give it a go if I have to
Petrol
Don't care about MPG
5 doors
0-60 under 8
Decent boot
Not too long... in case we do keep two cars, our driveway isn't very long
Can enjoy a track session every now and then even completely standard (I might get away with a few subtle mods over time...)
Around £15k maybe a couple of grand more for the right car
After an initial look I'm tempted by a Golf R, or secondly a 308 GTi. Prefer the Golf R to Golf GTi as hate all the GTi wheels!
Focus ST/anything from MINI unfortunately pathetic boot

The answer probably is a golf, I would suggest the GTI over the R though, greater fun to drive, more manuals available, different wheels available, much cheaper insurance and cheaper cap ex.
Only other option if you're partial to a lease deal would be a new megane 280 or Leon Cupra, both around £250/month both decent cars.

Golf and Cupras very obvious choice, quality, build quality etc. You won't be disappointed. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202...
However, I also really like these, especially in that light blue. Something different, rave reviews from Evo and don't think you'll have any reliability issues.

I love the Hyundai's, but to get a non-cat car, you're looking at £20k which is too rich for me.
Did look at SEAT cars, but don't appeal any near as much as the Golf. I would consider a GTi over R, I could just change the wheels I suppose... I suspect the GTi would be a better track car?

Personally, while you _could_ do with a Golf sized car the boot isn't massive and with two children *and* a (potential) baby I'd want more space. The Golf is fine for day to day with two older children but would be a tight squeeze for 2 adults and 3 children if you ever want to go anywhere. Hell there are times with a Mondeo Estate I could do with more (but not enough to get anything bigger).The house is close to work. Anyway, in the time honoured fashion of everyone recommending their own car that doesn't even match the OP's brief... Mondeo 2.5T.

What age are the children?
If you want a good steer then the ST/308 are the picks the Golf R/Cupra R aren't as sweet a steer especially if you're talking about trackdays all four can do them but the first two will be more fun.
I have to say if MPG isn't a concern then I'd break the 2014 rule & buy a VXR8 it'll do the family duties with ease as well as being great on the track depreciation will be slower than a hot hatch & the grin on your face will be massive.

Think the R hatch is out now... didn't realise it had a smaller boot than the GTi (I knew this was the case with the Mk5, but AT states them both has being the same, incorrectly!)So an R estate is a definite possibility. Though seem even rarer to get the 19s which is an absolute must imo (though I guess can be bought separately?) can't really see an estate going round a track though

Well that rear diff and exhaust has to go _somewhere_! They _may_ have just taken the size of the boot in the upper position. On the GTi etc you can have the boot floor in two different positions, the R has it only in the upper position. I *think* the R Estate doesn't have the same issue but we only have the hatch so don't know about the estate!
