Having closed Madeira Drive to motor traffic to assist with enforcing lockdown restrictions, Brighton & Hove City Council is considering keeping it closed permanently. Despite a claim in the article that people polled were 60 per cent in favour of keeping the road closed, the poll actually attached to the article shows 60 per cent of people are against it!

Besides the damage to businesses, the move would also pose a clear threat to the many motoring events which have been taking place on Madeira Drive since the first Brighton Speed Trials was held in 1905. Other events to use the location are the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run (since 1927), the Sunbeam Motorcycle Club's Pioneer Run (since 1930), the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society Run (since 1962), the Classic Car Run (since 1988) and a Kit & Sports Car Run (since 2000), along with many other smaller club events. As well as their historical importance, these events are popular with thousands of people and attract visitors from Europe and the Americas. Madeira Drive was only constructed in 1890, so it coincided with the dawn of the motor-car and its motoring heritage goes back almost to the beginning of its life.
A petition has been started against the proposal on the website of Brighton & Hove City Council. The council previously tried to block the Speed Trials from going ahead in 2014 but their decision was overturned by a petition which received 12,400 signatures.

If the council go ahead with their threat to make the pier end of the road exit only, with access only via Dukes Mound, then that will pretty well kill off any practical use of Madeira Drive for commercial events such as the Veteran car and commercial rallies.
Brighton is slowly but surely freezing out motor vehicles.
