My bike is a 1996 RF900, with carburettors. Several months ago I set the valve clearances, replaced the camchain (I suspected it was stretched) and sent the carbs off for ultrasonic cleaning. I've finally got round to balancing the carbs and I think I've got them fairly well balanced. As I brought carbs 1 and 2 into sync (according to the vacuum gauges) the revs rose considerably. I had set the idle speed high while balancing using the idle speed adjuster on the left hand side of the bike.

However after balancing and having wound the idle speed adjuster out fully, the bike still idles at 2000rpm when it should idle at 1100-1200rpm, so I suspect something else is out of adjustment. Any ideas on what I should be checking? Carbs are a bit of a black art to me so any pointers would be appreciated.

Cable adjustment is the first thing I would look at - is it now 'hanging' on the cable rather than the idle stop?

Next port of call could be looking for an air leak - are the spindles worn? Is it difficult to start from cold?

I know this is an old topic but just to close it off...

When I first started working on the carbs I foolishly split the bank of 4. I'm not doing that again. I couldn't get them back together so got a shop to clean everything and re-assemble the bank. They missed out the balance adjustment screw between 1 & 2 and 3 & 4. An easy fix once spotted, and the bike runs fine now.
