Hi,

Took my 2015 A4 for a service last week and they have recommended a cambelt and waterpump change. Its only got 35k on the clock and wanted to see if this is necessary? They also want £1250 to do the job, is this normal or how/where could I get it cheaper?

Any advice much appreciated!

Not sure on the interval for replacing but that sounds like an extortionate amount of money for the work. Assume this is a main dealer? A decent independent / Audi specialist would do it for a lot less than that.

£1250 is insane pricing. Postvup an itemised quote.....

You should be paying half that (at an indie).

It does need doing. Rubber belts do degrade with time as well as mileage.

You'll regret not changing it if it fails as it will wreck the engine.

£185 + VAT = £222 per hour for labour is crazy.

Shop elsewhere. That's nigh on robbery.

They are usually due 5 years or 140k whichever comes first. Some don't need waterpumps, it seems more common on newer vag cars for the pump to be driven off the other end of the engine. The 2.0TDi should be around £500, £600 using genuine parts.

Well OTT, I had my S4 MOT'd at the local Audi dealer last year (because I had the MOT 'warranty' from before when car was under warranty).

Whilst there they asked me if I wanted the brake fluid changing as it was due. They charged me £65 which I didn't think was too bad and even if more than an independent would charge, was worth it to avoid another trip/wait etc.

When I had my A5, there was a service menu for cats over the years old. A cambelt and water pump was about £400. (Only a few years ago)
