Micro transactions. For or against?
Discussion
These aren’t new, but they are so ingrained in games now that they are hard to ignore. I was looking for a new game and read the reviews for Madden 20 and N2K20 and both are based around that model to get anywhere. I’m well aware of FIFA as well. The stand out figure is 3.4% per pack of getting anything worthwhile.
I’m not against them, however when it starts impacting the gameplay and the ability to be successful I think it is a step too far. I always thought Fortnight had the balance right.

When i played games as a kid you bought a game that is what you paid. updates included.
I have no problems as an Adult with it, but kids no, it ends up as a form of gambling and hooks them in. There should be an RRP and you should bever be able to charge 5% more for in game stuff on top.

I can just about tolerate season passes.
If you can pay to get ahead in a game quicker than you normally would then that's a s
tty unfair money grabbing model.
Everyone should start the same and grind for the weapons/powers etc, but then the grind shouldn't take like 100 hours either.
Paying for new skins etc I'm fine with as no advantage is gained

If the console market is bad, then the mobile one is a million times worse. I know of someone who has spent at least £40,000 on a WWE game (which just to hammer it home, is the cost of a brand new Mustang on jpegs of Hulk Hogan). It's completely unregulated gambling which urgently needs reigning in.

To add even more context, that's the cost of 20,000 jpegs of Stone Cold Steve Austin. Rainbow 6 Siege has it about right. It's pretty easy to grind to earn credit to get kit. You can spend your credit on gun skins and character skins, or new characters.
You also win random awards by playing more - skins again.
You can spend money on skins you only get with money - but they give you no advantage, or you can spend money on characters.

The thing is you can just buy the game and play it.
The gambling money aspect is only to compete against other people spending money.
YOU choose to do that. All you are saying is that you dont have willpower and you want to be better than anyone else.
Sometimes people seem more bothered about comparing themselves to others than actually playing a game for fun.
Competing in ANY sport costs money. Deal with it.
No one needs DLC. It really is just a case of FOMO. And remember FOMO is a negative quality in you.

Don't have an issue with paying for additional content, but it shouldn't be hidden behind gambling.
The problem is the people who spend this sort of money are driving the industry. I don't play many "Free to play" multiplayer mobile games, mainly because they require huge amounts of patience, or huge amounts of cash. But when there are players who pump in £000's every week then you can't blame the developers for milking them...

i think you jumped to the wrong conclusion. The games are being geared up to induce similar feelings to gambling, the kids will end up moving onto gambling games.
Oh i see, apologies.Yes, there is that- but I don't think it is just children targeted. I think it targets everyone, and it is an easy thing to fall into.
They know what they are doing and they target the 'whales' especially.
Hiving off parts of the game to sell as day 1 DLC is one thing, microtransactions and loot boxes is another - especially in games you already have paid for.
Free games then ofcourse not. I got the battle pass to warzone but the game was free. I dont play multiplayer anyway. To continue getting content for games, new maps, new events etc then it needs micro transactions to allow the game to continue to develop, no money in it and it will be dropped and the game will "die"
Now these packs I am completely against. Thats gambling. Paying for skins etc is fine as you know what your getting.

Micro transactions for skins, etc. I’m fine with. I understand that it can be problematic for children, but no more so than not wearing the right brand of trainers, etc.
Loot boxes can bugger off though. I may (or more accurately may not!) pay for something if I know what I’m getting, but I’m not paying for a chance to get something I might want. It’s bad if it’s cosmetics, and awful if it actually impacts on how easy it is to win.
I’m also happier with micro transactions in free to play games. Games I’ve bought (particularly if they’re full price) that then want me to fork out more can get in the sea.
