Cheap commuter car up to £1000
Discussion
I’ve just started working in a different place which requires a 50 mile round trip every day, I’ve got an A5 which is perfectly up to the job but don’t want to put mega miles on it plus wear and tear so will just use that at the weekend and want a cheap, comfortable, reliable diesel to get to work and back, ideally 45+ MPG, cheap to run, not likely to throw up anything major and an auto would be great but not essential.
An estate would be great as I’ve got a lot of tip runs to do in the next few months but again not a dealbreaker, was thinking a leggy Volvo V70 D5 if I can find one but open to anything really.

You need to be real at £1000 you take your chances, I'd use the Audi for a while then when you have a bit more money you can get a better commuter I'd say 2-2.5K is the sweet spot.

It’s not that I couldn’t spend the extra at the moment, I can do a fair bit of work on things if needed myself, and just want a shed that I’m not worried about.
C220 CDI is a pretty good shout though, I had a coupe one years ago and it was a good little car, only bad thing was a problem with one of the injectors but easily enough to sort out.

The coupe would also be good for tip runs:

The CLK is another one worth a look as the rear seats fold & they have a bigger boot the the C Class so tip runs will be simple.

At this price point the Mercedes are a good shout as they're easy to maintain parts are plentiful & inexpensive & as you know they're simple to maintain if you're good with the spanners.
