I’m looking to buy a car in Spain (an old Mercedes), and I’m looking for advice on how to go about a purchase - under normal circumstances I’d fly there, inspect, hand over the cash and drive it home, but the current circumstances mean that isn’t really a scenario that’s viable

What are my alternative options??

Not particularly plentiful I have found so far. I have been trying to find an inspection/mechanical appraisal service that operates within Spain for some time, with no joy.

Most of the cars are poorly advertised and in less than accessible locations (usually North West for anything interesting). I haven't found anything yet - please update the thread if you do.

If you are really serious and/or desperate to buy the car I'd suggest going there and viewing it and making payment when with the car, granted this is going to be a hard thing to do in the current climate but looking at it from the opposite side for a moment, If someone came on Pistonheads and said I'm selling an old Mercedes I've had an email from a buyer who says he's in Spain and wants to buy my car sight unseen and says he will send a transporter to collect and pay by bank transfer. Most if not everyone on here would be saying it's a scam, run a mile etc.

I'd think there's too much scope for things to go wrong unless you are willing to make the trip or maybe as an alternative know someone over there who can make a viewing and purchase on your behalf and store it for a couple of months.

There must be plenty of knowledgeable PHers in the area local to the seller who could inspect the car for you and give you an appraisal. Maybe a garage set up to deal with ex-pats could help you out. Even if you have to pay, it's got to be worth it for the peace of mind?

Thanks for the thoughts, much appreciated. Think I’ll search to see if I can find a someone who might be able to check it out for me
