Got a bit of a quandry here.

There is a domain name that I am interested in buying. The owner has indicated that they might be interested in selling, but has given me no indication as to how much to offer.

But to put a further fly in the ointment, the domain's registrar is currently Easyspace who charge a release fee for transferring to another registrar of (wait for it) £49. So if I do manage to make an acceptable offer to the current owner, I either have to stay with Easyspace as the registrar for that domain or, if I want to transfer it to my usual registrar, then I have to factor in an extra £49 to whatever I purchase the domain for, it seems.

Or do I? If you initiate an ownership transfer via Nominet (it's a .co.uk domain) then can you wrest it from the clutches of the existing registrar during the transfer of ownership?

if its a .uk, you can simply pay Nominet £15 + vat for a Change of Registrar override.

The main hassle for buying a .uk is the paperwork involved in getting you listed as the new owner.

Actually taking active control of the domain is easy, simply sign up for an account at a quality, car loving domain registrar then have the current owner change the IPS tag (via nominet or whomever) and you will then have full control over it.

Ah, yes, but that is the main point of my post. The current owner's registrar charges a frankly extortionate release fee of £49 to change the IPS tag to another registrar. Hence my question as to whether it is possible to cut the current registrar out of the loop during the transfer of ownership process.

Thats the part about the £15 nominet fee, he can contact nominet direct and request the Tag change.

£15 + vat, et voila.

trés bien
