Apologies if this has been done to death, checked back 5 or 6 pages and couldn't see anything on it.

Looking at buying a used bike, a few years old for around 7k. Noticed the statistic that the UK economy shrank by 20% in April and was wondering if I'd be better waiting a few months to see how things play out? It's not a massive deal but could be a bit sore if things tank and I bought something a grand or two more than I could have.

Cheers.

Yes they should get cheaper but I've bought 2 and sold 2 recently, the last one I think I paid too much but I wanted it now, they get cheaper every winter too and they'll be cheaper in a years time...

Or you could just buy what you want and enjoy it wink

Appreciated biggrin

Would rather ask, don't mind paying more but don't know the current state of things to the point where it might be stupid to buy right now.

I have been watching Fireblade Sp's 2017 to 2019 about 3 months ago they seemed to be around £11500 to £12000. The same bikes now have dropped in number and are now around £13000 to £13800 ie they have risen by around £1500. Dealers restricting stock and raising margins to make ends meet?

If you don't have a job come August and no prospect of getting a job for a good stretch after would you still buy the bike? If yes decide whether to buy now and enjoy the weather or maybe wait until September and potentially get an amazing deal.

I can't see prices dropping that much, they've gone up recently imo (could just be summer). Might be the odd distressed seller bot not enough to impact the whole market.

Yeah it would be cash, but if business tanks (been fine so far) I'd probably have appreciated the money instead of the bike!

All very hypothetical and I could just sell it at a loss should the worst happen. A lot of fear from various places about how bad it's suddenly going to be afterwords is a small part of my thought process, but the larger part is just the potential clumsy decision of buying something a few months too early if we're talking a couple thousand.

Got the i2i Motorcycle Academy next month and would much rather do it on the naked I have in mind, rather than my uncomfortable, less refined, 20 year old GSXR. Making this thread gave me douche-chills, given I'm not normally an over-thinker of big decisions but thought I'd ask anyway.

No one ever really knows, I bought a £14k car after the initial drop in the last recession - everyone said they'd be worth £5 next year but I intended to keep it... it turned out to be crap so I sold it 18 months later - made £2k biggrin

I think that now people have been allowed out a lot of people are buying stuff to cheer themselves up.
Along with the great weather we had last month, all that pent up bikeyness needs to come out.
I would guess that there may be people in difficult circumstances and finding a bargain for that money may involve a private seller.

I don't think bikes will ever tank in value- there's too few of them. What you might find is they're very difficult to sell without taking a bath on the value, so as noted you might be in bother if things get really bad.

This is my view on proceedings.

Bought a 4XV R1 couple of weeks ago. Probably paid a bit over the odds as it really is mint but had a truly memorable ride out with friends on it last weekend and that’s what it’s all about for me. Probably worth 2p and a crisp packet now but who cares, the memories are priceless 👌

No harm in making a stupid offer for any that are on sale.
Lots of people out there who have already been told they are losing their jobs and need some cash.

Do you ask permission and self guidance from someone if you need a st ? Seriously this is a bike forum not a financial institution, I've probably just lost 4k on a new bike I purchased 2 weeks ago, just buy something, life's to short, you could be dead in 6 months ( as could I ) , regardless of speculation and scare mongering life goes on and nothing is going to be given away regardless of peoples situation .
The rich get richer the poor stay poor and the working class stays the same.

Buy it now and enjoy it for the remainder of the Summer or wait until Winter is upon us , which is a better time to buy and by then the economy will truly have shown how much it has declined , people are not going to drop thousands on a 7k bike either way IMHO.

Dont know if anyone has tried ringing their insurance company , I spoke to mine last week and both where incredibly busy, not just because they where working from home and short staffed, mainly because of the amount of people buying bikes.

Cant imagine new sales are doing quite so well but a friend who imports classic bikes is selling them as fast as he puts them up for sale, so I think "right now" id buy one but ive never been that strategic or sensible..!

Personally ive done very well buying bikes in the "off " season, particularly in December.

You wont know it until you've tried it...

As I bought a KTM from a dealer in January, added 800 miles and sold it privately for a profit recently, I'd say it's not bks
