I’m getting on my own nerves now

I’m probably like many on this site that even when they aren’t looking for a car, they spend much time looking at cars.

The words ‘if I were in their shoes I’d get a ..........’

Why is it that when I’m looking at a car for me I just can’t make decision?

With a rough combined top budget of approx £13k I go from a top spec Mondeo, to a M Sport 3 series, then to a Skoda Superb, then to a Merc C Class, but can’t settle on a choice.

I want Cruise, heated seats, sat nav, sunroof etc. I want it to have some oomph, whilst maintaining good mpg. Ave 10k miles a year.
I have settled on either a tourer or a hatch but not saloon.

Why is it so hard?

I've found test drives help those that are indecisive, so maybe do that & you should be sorted but with your budget it'a a simple choice of the Mondeo Titanium (preferably with the X Pack) they tick the boxes & are a good ster:

Out of the ones you're thinking I'd say Superb. Nice spec on most of them, very practical, look really good imo, and very comfy. Less brand tax too I think.

There is something about the Superb that really appeals to me and it doesn’t have the brand tax as you say but they are holding values.
I had the Mk2 and that was a nice motor.

The Skoda is no longer the bargain it was and would be lacking in the fun department, and yes i realise i've put forward a Lexus.

When car change time comes along I go round and round in circles trying to find "the one" and so over the years I have adopted a strategy to help decide.

I start by listing a number of attributes I need in a car E.g. Petrol/diesel, 2/4 seats, practical, spec, desirable features/tech etc then I commit this to paper and list some cars Im Interested in and tabulate a list of costs and pros and cons to help narrow the field.

Problem is this then manifests itself into a spreadsheet with more and more attributes until hopefully with some creative man-maths something drops out at the end of the process.

Two problems with this approach:

1) I usually can't afford the (correct) answer

2) get lost in analysis paralysis


The only way to move forward for me is to go test drive some contenders and get the new car buzz!

Usually works once you've experienced a few but of course that is going to be difficult at this time but it's always worth trying

Listen I have a car for sale on autoste.com for £690. Lovely yellow thing.

You could buy it, use it for a couple of years and save the best part of £12k depreciation. Perhaps have a few months unpaid leave from.work ?

This is where Autotrader comes into its own for me. You can search and specify your parameters like fuel type, engine size, age, price min and max, body type/s, leave make and model blank and see what comes up. You may get options you hadn't thought of and it makes it easier to compare those you have shortlisted for value for money, travel distance if that matters etc etc
