Hello

When buying a car, regarding the V5... What is the difference between filling out the regular green section, or filling out the yellow motor trader section?

What difference does it make?

Yellow section doesn't register as a keeper.

Yellow section is "passed to trade" completed and posted to DVLA by the registered keeper when selling to the trade.

I understand that, but my question is what the difference is for me, as a trader. Do I still have to SORN it? Do I get the new logbook as normal? Is it quicker? etc

I am not a dealer but my understand is that the previous owner sends off the yellow slip and you (as the dealer) keep the rest. You do not send it off, you just keep it until the buyer wants it when he gets the car. DVLA just use the yellow slip to note that it is temporarily being kept by you.

You do not need to sorn as long as conditions are met. https://www.gov.uk/sorn-statutory-off-road-notific...

That makes perfect sense.

In effect it gives me the logbook for the next keeper immediately, rather than having to wait.

If your a trader, when buying the car you fill out the yellow keeper section, you can post this or you can move the car into the trade online (just like when you change owner) this then takes the owner off the system and removes the roadtax (the registered keeper will get a letter to say they are no longer the registered keeper and they will also receive a cheque for the remaining roadtax

You keep hold of the V5 until the car sells, then you can either add the change of keeper online or post the completed v5, the green slip goes to the new keeper.

You need to use trade plates to move the car or carry out roadtests. Trade plates are for demonstration or moving the car around, not for popping to Waitrose with.

As the comment above,

Use yellow slip, easy to do online, doesn’t add an owner, also you don’t have to sorn the car either which is one less hassle,

Car cannot be driven on the road though unless you have trade plates,

This allows the new owner to buy the vehicle and use the green slip to tax it straight away.

Far and away the simplest solution is to use the online service. Just need the most recent V5C reference number.

Basically means you can park in pay and display car parks without a ticket.

According to me if you want to register as a keeper. You need that Yellow Section.
