Next Car After 987 Cayman S? 25-35k

Hi Guys,

Mileage is getting on with my 987S now (99k) and although i'm one of the lucky ones that doesn't have the "common" issues these cars tend to have, i am thinking of moving it on for something a little newer! I bought my 2006 Cayman when it was 7 years old or 17k (52k on the clock) back in 2013, natural progression would be to move into a 981S but are these over priced? a good conditioned 981S seem to be selling for 31-35k which is crazy considering its 7 year old car!

What would you guys be looking at?

I'm currently looking at getting a Cayman, but it is planned to be a stepping stone to an Evora in a few years.

i haven't actually seen many for sale on PH, i'll take a look now, good recommendation!

What do you want to replace it with? Another sports car?

I was in an almost identical situation last year, the only difference is I had a 987.2 Boxster S. Same budget to upgrade.
I didn't really feel that any other similar sports cars on the market were really worth the cost to upgrade. The 987 is just so good at what it does.
I ended up looking at M5s and M6s - obviously different cars entirely and ended up with a Mustang.

ideally looking for another drivers car that feels special, i had a DC2 Integra Type R before this which i had for a while which ticked both boxes.

I test drove an F80 M3 last year and i didn't get on with it at all, far too heavy bit of a numb driving experience (sorry if i upset anyone) it was however an absolute rocket!

i actually laughed when i read that! great cars on your search there most of which i've considered. The Giuila Quadrifoglio looks the most attractive to me but only the ropey ones seem to be hanging around the 35k figure

may be worth removing the picture or scribbling out the postcode if that's yours postcode in cambridge sir.

Exactly why I never went for the M5 and M6, though with hydraulic steering I imagine they were less numb.
Modern Ms are just not very special IMO.

thought about this but its very similar to the Cayman, i think i read that 55% of the Cayman shares its parts with the 997 911, 20% or so with the boxster and the remaining are unique to the Cayman

Its only slightly more powerful but it also weighs a slightly more too so not sure if there would be much performance advantage? plus it would feel like the same car. The 911 hasn't ever appealed to me unless its a GT/Turbo model.

even finding these are few and fa between. if i were to consider a 997.1 it would have to be a Hartech conversion

It would have to be an Exige if i were doing that but the reliability puts me off, plus i'd like to be in something newer. ideally 2013-2016

the old ones are too slow and the new ones are too expensive

completely agree, i got invited to a driving experience day with Alfa UK around Silverstone (10 hot laps with a professional racing driver ...he did 2 i did the remaining 8, no rev limits etc, as long as he feels safe you can go as quick as you like) and i was blown away with how much better the Giulia Quadrifoglio is over the F80 M3/4's.

I’ve had a couple of 987 Caymans, currently a 987.2 S with nice spec. It‘a quite a hard car to upgrade from for under £50k.

I’m pretty set I’ll be sticking with Porsche or going Lotus for next car. The three I always come back to are:

997.2 C2S Manual - would like to try a 911, but mixed reviews vs current Cayman and which people prefer. 385hp sounds fun, but not many manuals come on the market to choose from.

991.1 Carrera (base) - like the looks, modern cabin and GT ability whilst still being good to drive. Wonder if it will feel much more powerful than 320bhp in current (lighter) car, although heard good things about the revvy engine.

Exige V6 - think this is really where I’m heading. Love the idea of going lighter than the Cayman with more power. Looks awesome and can imagine a real event to drive.

A combination of having both Porsche + Lotus I think would be very cool and give best of both worlds. Hoping that’ll be possible in the next few months (unless everything goes to st with CV19) starting with keeping my Cayman and picking up an Exige Sport 350 alongside, with the aim that if I like the Exige, have that as the raw car and p/x the Cayman towards a 911 (probably the 991.1) to have as more of the GT.


Just a few thoughts being in a similar position!

I keep going past a lovely 997 on my cycles and love the look of it, however it wouldn’t feel much of an upgrade. Every now and again a decent 981 BS drops into budget, and having driven one it feels an upgrade from the 987. I loved the Evora when I test drove one, so when safe (depending on where you are) I’d head over to Lotus and try one (Lotus Silverstone were great). It’s the closest I can think to the Cayman but improved in all ways except the gearshift...if you put a good exhaust on it!
