Chaps. Just sold my Alfa and have a thirsty hole in my life. I have been chatting on the smoker's barge thread as to what to replace it with, but thought I'd ask here for a broader view. Budget is probably around 5k, flexible for the right car, would probably prefer to spend 3/4 than 5/6 though. Fuel economy doesn't matter, I only do a few hundred miles a month, but I do want something I can trust to take me on road trips to north france, north wales etc so nothing too needy and unpredictable. I also really want to avoid chasing rust and cosmetic issues around (easier said than done I am sure), so looking for something clean rather than tatty. I won't do mechanical work myself but happy to pay a specialist to do it for me. I have a clamouring for a v8, but could also be happy with a 6 cyl. Nothing too low and sporty, too many speed bumps and speed limits for that, but still needs to be a bit interesting - e.g. big Lexus or Audi leave me feeling a little cold.
So, top of my list at the moment is a Jaguar XJ X350 v8. Anything else to consider? I looked at CLK500s before, maybe could think about those again.
Edit: ideally it would be ulez compliant as I live in the extended ulez zone from 2021. Seems even some x308 xjs are though.

To be fair what the guys on the smoker barge thread do not know about V8's around £5k is probably not worth knowing about.
The Jaguars are very nice if you are looking for the luxury saloon type of car but I think I would be tempted to go for an Audi A8 or a BMW 7 series personally maybe a 750i if I was feeling particularly masochistic at the time of purchase.
Or slightly leftfield but a VW Phaeton?

For me it would be a CLK500 everytime but I am bias.

Thanks! Can get some pretty modern v8s for 5k!

I'd like to go view this, but the 2008 XF you link with 40k less miles is cheaper. It doesn't appeal quite the same though...and had 100hp less.

Yes but how much of that 100bhp advantage is actually there now? The XF is leagues ahead interior wise also the XJ will be very close to needing a suspension refresh but the XF is an extra £250 a year to tax.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2020...

They're both good cars it's just down to which you prefer there's not really a wrong answer.

Indeed. It also turns out the XJ SV8 has a few cosmetic niggles, bits of corrosion etc., that need sorted - although the vendor sent me a literal spreadsheet showing the £30k he has spent on it during his 14 years of ownership. Too expensive at 6k, though. They're both good cars it's just down to which you prefer there's not really a wrong answer.
It seems that XF is a bit of an outlier though, it is the cheapest by a significant margin on AT.

I noticed that but sometimes people want to move on stock high tax & low mpg mean it's probably been a hard sell which is where you come in It seems that XF is a bit of an outlier though, it is the cheapest by a significant margin on AT.
