Bugger, got the Noble out this morning for a run to the office. Half way there and I start to get a few odd noises coming from behind me.
Hoped it might be a few things groaning from lack of use, but I'm pretty sure I have a lunched gearbox.
Put the car in 5th at 3000rpm under normal load and it sounds like a coffee grinder behind me. I could be wrong but I think I can just about make it out in third too!! all pother gears sound fine. There seems to be a bit of a whine too in 5th but not diff whine, or at least, I don't think it it is.
Any ideas???

I would like to put that in perspective....
My 3R has 5K on the clock and this is the first real problem I have had.
My 4.8 goes into the dealer tomorrow for a front suspension clonk, gearbox reset, bluetooth car kit issue, and rear window that won't wind up on occasions. I've had a few X5's and you get the odd niggle like these.
Anyway, my point is that the Noble has been very reliable, at least as reliable as any BMW. Anyone considering a Noble shouldn't be put off by these minor problems.
Can I have my free gearbox rebuild now please ???

Ok drove the car home last evening and the noise is a little worse.
5th gear is very noisy like a coffee grinder. You can also hear some noise in third. Apart from the noise though everything seemingly works OK. I do not get any gear selection problems and it doesn't pop out of gear at all.
At tickover in neutral all sounds fine.
I have used both 3rd and 5th (albeit sparingly) and they seem to pull/work fine.
Any ideas?? Could it be a linkage problem??

I guess the linkage could be stopping it engaging properly? I think you need expert help!
If its a gearbox rebuild thats needed I'm told that www.gearboxman.co.uk (or .com) is highly recommended.

You've got to take this seriously - its beginning to sound expensive. A rebuild will replace only whats needed, broken or worn. If ti is damaged internaly the more you drive it the more you damage.
I'd get a service centre to listen to the noise asap

Paul,
If you drive in 3rd/5th then dip the clutch does the noise disapear? I.E. Is the noise only present when under power and does it increase in volume/frequency when more power is applied?
If the noise is only present (or only much louder) in two specific gears and/or when under power we can rule out something rubbing a driveshaft or similar and a clutch friction material issue hence this only really leaves the gearbox. It sounds as if you may have had a bearing break up.
I suggest you follow Pauls advice and get it along to a service centre ASAP.
Best Regards
Matt

Thanks for the responses.
Thought it would be the box, but hoped it might be something else!
Dipping the clutch makes no difference so rules out clutch or thrust bearing.
I have to confess I did graunch a gear ever so slightly yesterday morning (big feet small pedals)came off the clutch a little too soon!!
I guess I'll get it booked in then! Ah well good job I can use the CSL for my fun then!
