Today is my birthday. I was playing Metal Gear Solid 'Phantom Pain' for the second time. After I had completed one of the side missions, I was asked to return to Mother Base urgently as something had developed. When we touched down, I was met by several characters who sang 'Happy Birthday'. Then another character, 'Quiet', shot HBD into a crate. The crate had cigars inside, one of which she lit for me by shooting at it.

I do not know how the game 'knew' it was my birthday, nor was I expecting it to be part of the game play! I was un-nerved but also pleased at the same time.

Anybody else had an unexpected surprise from a game out there? Is this the only game that does this sort of thing?

I'm pretty sure Dungeon Keeper did it back in the day. At least one of the Gran Turismos gave you a car on your birthday I think? Death Stranding does similar, not surprising.

Fallout 4, one of the early characters has a huge library of voiced names for their dialogue, so rather than addressing you with a generic "sir", they' can actually use the name you've given your character.

Metal Gear Solid had a boss who read your memory card and commented on what other games you'd played.

I remember playing black & white and the game would whisper death every time a villager died.

Then one time after playing quite a while it whispered my actual name and I nearly jumped out of my skin.

Sid Meier's Pirates used to change to everyone talking in exaggeratedly piratical language ("Avast! Ye lubbers!" etc) on International Talk Like A Pirate Day (some time in September).

Psycho Mantis. He only did the Konami games. He also “read your mind”, meaning he knew were you’d move, and you could never shoot him.

To beat him, you had to unplug your controller and pop in player 2 port!

And he comes back briefly in MGS4, but he can't read the PS3's memory or make the original sixaxis controller rumble.

I forgot about that!

The throw back to MGS1 was amazing too, how you could essentially do the the helipad level in a flashback.

Ah yes, revisiting Shadow Moses, that was a proper goosebump moment.

Batst crazy game, but I absolutely loved it.

I used a magazine guide to beat that back in the day, no idea how anyone was expected to figure that out for themselves (there was also a transponder code you needed to beat the game, which was in a screenshot on the back of the box).
