Hi all - general query. Looking at a first gen 1998 R1, however, fairings look like 2 gen - it was registered 31st March 1998 - would this 1st generation have come with this fairing?
Also £2k with 37k mileage - fair price? Thanks in advance.

The 4xv was available with that and the stacked funky lettering.

Not saying it's never been binned, but the fairing could well be legit.

Brutal performance for 2k
And they handle ok.
Highsides and Wheelies beware.
Fast Bike stripped one completely at 25k
No engine wear was found.
Still a very capable Motorcycle.
Book your trackdays now.
Bargain!

Does look like a 1999 paint job for the front fairing so it's likely been upside down at some stage. Take the mid sid panels off and look at the dates codes - they'll be from after the bike was registered.

On an anorak note I'd use the tern 1st generation to cover the 4XV model produced for the 1998 & 1999 model years. I'd call the ones produced for 2000 and 2001 (5JJ) as 2nd gen.

£2k seems good value at the moment provided you know what your looking for in terms of the damage repair and wear & tear.

Exup & Deltabox sticker placements are wrong

Would suggest at the least some paint. If not a fairing. But it will be 20 years old so....

As ever, buy on condition at this price.

That IS the 2nd generation 5JJ model from either 2000 or 2001. Pointier top fairing & headlights, different mirrors, drilled heel plates on rearsets, NACA ducts on fairing lowers etc

It has 5JJ mid and lower fairings. The 4XV has the stacked YZF on the middle, and speed blocks at the bottom of the lower fairings rather than the yamaha wording. The rear mudguard is missing and the exhaust is not standard. Bear this in mind if you are after a standard example because although these parts come up for sale now and again, they are getting rare and very pricey.

Had one back in 2003, it was metal, I recall the very short 1st gear causing instant wheelies off the lights. Still a great looking bike

Yep, all top spots.

Another giveaway for the later 2000/2001 model is that it has a five sided rear seat pad/cowl and the back lights are sculpted and angled back under the bike. I’ve a 4XV and the back lights really grate.

However that is pretty cheap at 2K.
