Don’t know if this has been done before...but what sort of car would do the best time round the TT course do you think?

Is the Impreza about as quick as can be done or would something along the lines of an LMP1 car be better?

I’m assuming a single seater wouldn’t be much good due to the bumps, although my knowledge is fairly limited.

I stand to be corrected, but I believe Rally driver Mark Higgins in Rally spec Scooby holds the unofficial car record......

If cars were offered the same access and development time, they'd be faster. I think I'm right when I say there isn't a true racetrack on the planet where bikes hold the lap record.

Bikes are amazing, they're absolutely a better experience than a car and they can be phenomenally fast, but physics is against them compared to cars. Stopping and turning is slower, drag at high speed is greater.

In the real world with traffic, bike every time. On a track with equal access, it's the car.

It's been done to death (yet I still answer, go figure!), but there are loads of kinks and small corners on the TT course which bikes can straight-line, whereas a car would need to alter its course. I think that will count for the bikes being faster.

Overall, a tuned up rally car will be best I would think, any topgend circuit racer would be too wide and low, and probably not have a tight enough turning circle for the hairpin!

It's a shame that a bike has never been afforded the same concessions around the course that the "record breaking" car was given.
Like a rolling start from Governor's, no other vehicles on the course and no race to worry about.
Until a bike is given the same advantages it's utterly meaningless!

Anyway, as has been pointed out, it's been done death with the same circular arguments, over and over again!

Every fking year rolleyes is this Welshbeef in disguise?

All conjecture, and the debate always gets very heated, in short it will never happen that a properly fast, Aero equipped car will ever get a run, all previous were sponsor related publicity events.

Look at Tony Ponds 100mph lap and then look at the 2011, 2014 & 2016 laps that Mark Higgins did. From a road car with tyres and zorst to a full-on WRC/American rally/hillclimb/rally-x hybrid special, and they have still only managed to increase the average speed by 28%/28mph.

This is still 8mph short of equalling the TT lap record and as a result of the massively diminishing returns, it might as well be an eternity.

PH has regular threads full of fools/children claiming that an F1 car would be quicker, or an LMP, or maybe their dad in a Mk3 Cortina with twin 40s, but you only need to spend a few minutes watching the in-car footage to see that this isnt really the case. Theyre blinkered by either ignorance, or foolish anti-bike prejudice

This question always fires up the wimps that have a massive chip on their shoulder about bikes. Or those whose Mum, Wife, Boyfriend wouldn't let them have one.

I reckon the Porsche 919 would piss all over the bike record at the TT by a country mile, will it ever happen? Probably not.
