NIP and sold car - cool starry bro and all that

No real point to the post other than wondering how things happen.
I sold a car last November, on the 11th, completed the online sale thing with the DVLA and have the receipt from the DVLA saying that their records have been updated, and the receipt has a printed date of 11th November.
Today, 19th June I have a NIP for that car....... 7 months after the DVLA acknowledge that I am not longer the registered keeper.
I assume that Sussex police use the DVLA database to prepopulate the NIP.
So how does that even happen? What a waste of their time and mine.

OP it's easily sorted, just email them and tell them when you sold the car and enclose a scan copy of the DVLA acknowledgement letter, if you still have any contact details of who you sold it to, give them those as well, job done.
Did you sell it to a private individual or into the trade? Out of interest what is the date of the offence and also the date the NIP was issued?

It does depend on how the car was sold, if you sold it to trade you may be shown as "Last registered keeper" there should be a rider to that which states the car is "in trade" but the traders details don't show on PNC so you would still be the last keeper details and as such you received the NIP.
A similar thing happened to me a few years ago, I sold a N reg Mercedes C180 Mot failure to a trader for scrap, move forward 2 weeks and I get an NIP for the vehicle speeding in Blackburn (I live no where near and have no reason to go there). I sent the NIP back with a covering letter explaining what I had done with the vehicle and I believed it was not road worthy and I heard nothing more.

I sold it to the trade,
The NIP is dated 18/6 and the offence is shown as 13/6. And for 78 in a 60.
I had one recently for a car I'd sold to a dealer.
Under my name it stated "previous keeper"
And the text was as follows.
""Please find enclosed a notice relating to a motor vehicle, which was previously owned by you.
We are aware that you have notified a change of ownership, but the details of the new keeper have not yet been registered with the DVLA.
I would be grateful for your assistance in providing me with the details of the person/company to whom you sold the vehicle, or any other information you may have which would assist us to trace the current keeper.""
So I'd guess your sale hasn't been updated with DVLA?

The NIP is dated 18/6 and the offence is shown as 13/6. And for 78 in a 60.
When you send the S172 part back that asks for driver details, just put the dealers name and address you sold it to and you have then fulfilled your obligation to give information and won't lay yourself open to a prosecution for failing to furnish details.
Happens all the time.
I sold an E65 7 series to a Taggarts dealership in Scotland.
I got a call a couple of weeks later from the cops in Newcastle casing why i had abandoned it on the street. I had to send the DVLA proof i'd sold it, to whom and dates etc. All easily sorted but in this case it happened because the mob i sold it to don't send the V5's as they get them. Rather they will do it in batches, mine had just missed a batch it seems and that's where it went wrong.
No dramas though just minor inconvenience to send the letter etc. to prove it was no longer my problem. It all needs to be online now though and all the databases need to talk to each other much better.

I also sent a brief email to the Sussex Police email address on the letter to tell them that I think that might have an issue with the currency of the DVLA data, not really expecting a reply, but thought if nobody told them they might not know.
