What's the best way to carry a bulky camera, EG DSLR, and lenses on the bike?

Camera in a case round my neck works and is convenient but probably a hazard in a crash. Ditto a rucksack. Things in a topbox get shaken up when you go over bumps. I'm tending towards a tankbag as most resistant to bumps and vibration.

Does anyone have useful experience or cautionary tales?

As long as it's in a padded bag I don't think it will matter

I do this all the time, and haven't found a perfect solution. I might go back and try the Lowepro slingshot that I used to have but sold a few years ago (before I became a biker). That crosses over your body, but allows you to swing it around in front of you to get your camera out without taking it off.
