Hi Folks,

First time post here, I've tried to find some answers to my question but haven't found anything that I think helps.

I'm looking at replacing my current FL S3 with something bigger, it just isn't big enough for our needs anymore and so as much as it will be a hard and reluctant sale/trade I'm considering a pickup. You may have guessed from the title of this post that the top of the list is an Amarok. For me it offers the best interior and the reviews around that 3L V6 are always complimentary.

My major concern however is what depreciation might look like, production of the Amarok has ceased and I'd like to know some general thoughts on what this means for said depreciation. I’ve used a website to try and calculate the depreciation that claims to have 95% confidence, they project the truck I’m looking at to lose over 10k in two years, for a 68 plate that seems very steep, I could understand if it was brand new. I’d normally look at prices of similar spec’d ones on auto trader to gauge an idea but there's not that many that help me build a useful picture. Does anyone think that the projection from the website is entirely feasible?

The truck would be purchased for our private use and so we'd be paying the VAT, it wouldn't be used for any commercial purposes.

If the value of the Amarok is going to drop as heavy as truck is I think it would be enough to draw my attention elsewhere, likely to the Ranger as they're much cheaper and I was pleasantly surprised when we went to view one. None of the other offerings in the pickup sector I'm interested in unfortunately.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I should add that the depreciation estimate given was based on annual mileage of 10k.

I couldn't work out your current car (FL = Freelander maybe?). If you're looking at an Amarok, what is it you're needing - load carrying and/or offroad capability? Do you live in the country?

I run an agricultural contracting business, and we have vans, normal 4x4's and pickups. In many cases, the pickups are the least useful!

In many situations, a pickup is not ideal, especially if it's your only vehicle. They are mahoosive - parking spaces in towns are either too short - or when parking nose-on to the kerb, your arse end sticks out into the road. Multi-storey/underground car parks are a serious challenge, as are some supermarket car parks. In addition, if you have any kind of hardtop on the back, access to the load area is a challenge - I'm 6'4" and I struggle. I sometimes end up crawling in to get stuff out!

If you live and spend most of your time out in the sticks, with plenty of parking, it's different.

I think if your main concern is depreciation you need to look at a Toyota Hilux! smile

I read it as “facelift [Audi] S3” though I can understand the confusion as moving from a nippy hatchback to a massive pick-up is a bit of a knight’s move.

That makes more sense!

First time poster here - I was in the middle of the “purchasing process” for a 69 plate Amarok last week. I am a personal buyer and I wanted PCP to help manage the depreciation risk in 3 years. My main concern being further pressure on diesel cars / trucks. I was given a quote by the dealer and all was good. Paid my booking deposit and was looking forward to picking up my new truck this week.

But later that day...
VW / Ford deal announced, production officially canned and PCP withdrawn as an option by VWFS. Lease purchase offered as replacement product which shifts all the depreciation risk to the buyer. I think VW are very unsure what their trucks will be worth in 2-3 years when they start releasing new model off the Ford/VW platform. Between VW running away from their trucks and Anti-diesel sentiment it is not an easy time to go for an Amarok.

All,

sunbeam_apline, thanks a lot for taking the time to get back to me. I was referring to "facelift", apologies I should have been clearer, habit from being on AudiSport forums I guess.

I wouldn't say I need any of those daily, certainly not any heavy load carrying. I don't live out in the sticks, a small-ish town, but we do spend a lot of time out in the countryside. We were looking for something that offered the ability to carry all our stuff for the trips etc we intend on doing. My partner has horses too and so it would be used in that respect. We also just wanted to try something different.

I absolutely hear what you're saying about the Hilux, I actually do quite like it, and as you point out they do seem to hold their money well! However, the ~150bhp engine in it puts me off, that's not a criticism of the truck by the way, it's a commercial vehicle and I understand that, but I think for me it would just be too slow. This is why I was drawn to the Amarok, the 254bhp variant specifically. I don't drive fast by any stretch (and as I understand it the Amarok is even subject to some lower speed limits due to its weight), but for overtaking it's nice to know there's some 'omph' there if needed.

Guildford Growler, I sincerely appreciate you letting me know your story, it does seem to confirm what I suspected might be the case, it's disappointing as the same could be said for the Ranger. The dealer said they were still being manufactured but with the arrival of the next Ford/VW, how long for, and then I might just be in a similar position. Out of interest what are your next steps, has this put you off the pickup sector or are you seeking an alternative like the Ranger, Hilux etc?

Thanks all for your input.

Have you considered a VW T5/T6 van ?

They hang on to their value really well. I've got a couple of mates that swear by them. Carry 5 plus dog and bikes.

When I told the dealer I was not taking the lease purchase option and was walking away they went back to VWFS and magically a 3 year PCP deal was agreed yesterday afternoon. I am taking the deal and going with the Amarok. The PCP cost me in finance terms but means I have some protection from a total collapse in values.

I am a pick up guy by the way for lifestyle reasons and the Amarok has long been the truck I yearned for! I had an Isuzu Rodeo for 8 years which I loved but my wife hated. It was the definition of a Ute but as dependable as an old dog.

I do think electric is the next big change and will be here in pick ups by 2022. Ryvian are on their way and while it looks a little different it is selling like hot cakes in the US. Amazon bought 100,000 of their platforms and will put their delivery vans on them. It will become their core fleet vehicle over the next few years. So the shift is on and will get here. I love the Amarok now but in 4 years it may feel like a fax machine. I doubt it will happen that quickly but I am certain this is the last V6 Diesel I will ever purchase.

Thanks Drive Blind, it's a sensible and appreciated suggestion, very spacious and I know they hold their money very well, I hadn't considered it but will put it to my partner and see what she thinks.

Great that you've got in to the vehicle you've wanted for so long, especially so considering the initial PCP withdrawal. You sum up exactly how I feel with the suggestion of how dated it might be in 4 years, which is why I intended on keeping it for 2-3. Anyway enjoy the truck mate, hope it lives up to expectations and I'll keep on my search. Thanks for getting back to me.
