Xbox help please

The kids are driving me mental because a new external hard drive they bought keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. Have changed the power settings to no avail. Could it be that the power to hard drive is dropping in and out because of hardware fault? Would an external powered hub help? Thanks for any help.

Try a different usb socket? Also I’ve had two faulty usb3 cables so worth trying a different one.

Tried the other sockets, one doesn't work at all. The USB cable is a strange one, the end that goes into the external drive is in two sections, half of it like like a micro usb and the other half like like the older style square usb
