they probably do but are too sensible to admit it. There's a lot of snobbery attached to soaps, tv in general and newspapers. Folks will admit to listening to the Archers but not watching soaps. There's a lot of snobbery involved.

Who really cares?

I stopped watching neighbors and Hollyoaks after university. It may however have been a time thing once I started the daily 9-5!

My wife is highly intelligent - she’s an Oxford grad and a partner with one of the Big 4 accountancy firms, which requires a big brain - yet she rarely misses Coronation Street.

Part of the appeal is actually that the programme is so undemanding that watching it helps her to switch off after a tough day.

My OH watches them. While not what one might term a lover of high culture, she isn't dumb. I think she watches them to unwind because her job is very mentally taxing.

On a tangential note, I've noticed that the more mental energy my daytime activity uses, the lower-brow my reading habits become.

Not sure how watching soaps could help someone to unwind, what with all the misery and conflict. Perhaps they should introduce something set in sunny climes with attractive people. Id' watch that!

I am sure there are some who are on paper 'intelligent', scientists, dr's, nurses but on the whole, they're like the sun, super chav.

I don’t think that's true. A real cross section of society watch football.

I would say Rugby has a good mixture.

ive been a few times to the family bit and all you hear is f this f that, in front of kids for 90 minutes.

Rugby is watched by a much more civilized crowd than chavy football too. I think it's partly because rugby is much more private school than football which is very much a working mans sports.

Ah, now she does only watch the Aussie ones nowadays.

I always assumed the misery of soaps maybe made people feel better about their own lives. It's a peculiarly British thing I guess, most foreign soaps look rather glam.

My wife and I watch Coronation St, and then moan about it going downhill. Complaining about Coronation St is the glue that holds our marriage together.

I don’t watch soaps and I’m a plank. Maybe not a 4X2 but certainly a 2X4.
