Problems with BMW X5 40e
Discussion
Hello
I leased a 2018 BMW X5 40e hybrid. In winter, somehow the bottom was damaged. It turned out that there were some high voltage cables throughout the car's bottom. More surprisingly, the bottom of this car is only covered by some paper like extremely soft and flimsy plastic boards, which can be bent without using any strength.
The damage hit the cable and further caused the Electric Motor Electronics (EME) box failure. Now the car can not charge; engine light is on; the cooling and heating system not working. BMW said the repair costs would be over $13,000 (obviously too much). But BMW refused to repair it under new car warranty, by saying that it was caused externally.
I think this is a design defect because basically there is no any protection to the cable, which can be damaged easily and causer major failure. But BMW denied it. Does anyone encounter the similar problem before? How was it resolved? Now I don't know how to deal with this issue with BMW especially there aren't many of this model on the street. Any advice?
Thank you very much.

As sheepshanks says - it’s been accident damaged - this is what insurance is for.
You may feel it’s a design flaw but it may be just bad luck how and what was hit was enough to damage something like a cable running under the car. A lot of manufacturers like bmw run battery feed cables under the car front to back for years and we rarely saw any damage even with thin plastic undertrays
