warm start problem

Can I just confirm a symptom of the warm-start problem?

When you go to start the engine, does the starter motor click?

Thats what I'm suffering at the moment (since the warm weather), I just wanted to know if this sounds familiar?

I have the modwise kit, I know an auto electrician who will fit it as my wiring differs from other Chims.

My warm start problem was the starter motor, which eventually had to be replaced.
When I tried to start her and the engine was hot I got nothing at all. I thought it was an immobiliser problem at the time. But I would like to bet they are all different, It usually seems to be that way.

When I had warm start problem I had no noise at all, nothin', nix.

I have had warm starting problems two years ago, gradually getting worse, was simply the solenoid on starter motor on its way out. You'll see posts about it, common problem, suffers from the manifold heat.
I got my starter motor recond and new solenoid for £38
Perfect after that.
Just had starting problems again from layup, solenoid again. Only cost £28 this time. BTW, when it was warm start problem, got no clicks if I recall, this time I did get clicks, but starter motor did not turn engine over.

The warm start problem won't give a click. Its caused by the solenoid expanding with the heat and getting stuck - hence no movement and no click. Hitting it with the end of a broom handle can cause it to unstick from what I hear.

Sounds like you need to get the starter motor reconditioned. I had a similar thing on my old Ford Fiesta and fixed it by stripping down the motor, cleaning it and covering it in graphite powder. Worked a treat.

Just booked it in for its service next week, so while its there they will have a look at the starter motor, and the annoying tappet/ticky sound that the engine sometimes makes (although it ain't got louder in 5000 miles....)

He suggested that some Chims are fitted with a smaller starter that turns more quickly, and that at 11 years old it could well be on its way out.

Booked it into the ex-mechanic's place near Northwich, will let you know what hes like once its done.

I have the warm-start problem. (Or rather, my Chim does) There is NO click, it is just completely silent, after the fuel pump had pressurised the system.

It's going into Ferhursts on Thursday to be fixed.

Burning question is, should I get them to do the exhaust mod at the same time Waddya think?

This is the exact same problem I had. It was easily fixed under warranty with a new starter motor!

had this hot start problem.
no click.
david beer hot start kit has sorted it.
really easy to fit, takes about 10 minutes. (even for muppets like me!)

My wiring is different than the diagram that modwise supplied, so I haven't installed it yet. Getting a mate of a mate to do it for me (auto electrician).
