Shouldn't the red diagonals be in the lower half of the white?

The leading edge ones on the fin are. It depends where you think the flagpole is.

Apparently when doing flags on tail wings you always assume the mast is on the front of the plane. So the way it is is correct.

Might be the first time this government has overpaid for a contract and actually got the correct work done...

Think of as the flag pole being at the front of the fin and the flag flying out backwards......

Imagine the nose of the aircraft as the flag pole.

Apparently not. The leading edge of the tail fin is the “flagpole” so on the starboard side you’re looking at the “back” of the flag.

Doesn’t stop it being expensive.

Well spotted. I've found a pic of the other side of the plane and it looks like they're assuming the flagpole is in front of the tail - this would make it correct.

I agree it would be better t have the virtual flagpole to the left of the flag in each case however.

I must have missed the cost of this, how expensive are we talking exactly?

£900k. A paint job on a plane of this size is usually around £100k.

Included amongst 900k of routine maintenance that is required regardless. Don't believe the cost of the paintwork has been revealed. It isn't 900k though.

It's just one of those aviation traditions, may look a bit strange but you won't see anyone break tradition.
It also makes sense that it would fly in that direction if it was a real flag on a back of a plane, before it ripped off at around 100mph,that is.

American flag on race cars are the same, look how strange the flags on the side of the Haas F1 car look, but it's traditional and makes sense when you think of them as real flags.

Is there a link to where they say this? Only news articles I can find just say its for the paint job, but wouldn't surprise me if it's been sensationalised. (by the media or government)

I think it looks quite twee.

(Whenever I think of 'twee' for some reason I think of Des O'Connor)

Wrong?

For sure, when there are presently 295 similarly liveried planes currently grounded.

That is an interesting and totally useless fact (unless I ever decide to enter the plane painting business, which given my singular lack of artistic talent seems unlikely)

Well I think it looks great and a massive improvement over the previous 'aircraft grey'.

The thread title is wrong (it's not Mr Johnson's plane)
The flag complaint is wrong (the orientation is correct)
The costing complaints are wrong (it was in for a major service and refit of onboard gubbins along with a scheduled repaint - just the colour has been altered)

Apart from that, good thread. Would read again. biggrin
