Hi,

Just received new Audi Q7 today and there is a massive crack on windscreen. I am not at home but wife took delivery of the vehicle and noticed it. Tried to call Sales manager who is looking into what to do next. So far wife has refused to sign for car until they discuss options.

Wondering what I should do next. Difficult situation as I am at work so cannot really call dealer to discuss properly.

I thought perhaps if they agree to replace windscreen today I should accept vehicle and maybe discuss compensation later.

Compensation? Really? It probably just took a stone to the screen on the way over or the screen wasn’t fitted quite right and in the heat it’s cracked.

I’d just get the dealer to get the windscreen replaced and crack on. No pun intended. Would expect the dealer can arrange for an OE replacement at your house, they’d just call out auto glass or whoever to the dealer if it happened in their care.

Is it a brand new vehicle?

Seems strange that this was not noticed prior to leaving the dealer so maybe it cracked in the process of delivery through no fault of the dealer. If they are happy to replace straight away, why do you feel it warrants compensation?

My wife asked if they could replace for us and then we move on. Dealer said no but they can take car back and replace - but then I would have to collect vehicle (dealership is 4h away!)

Or alternatively we would have to arrange replacement of windscreen and then we can reclaim cost from Audi

Your only option is to reject the car. It no longer has the original windscreen and will take a price hit when you come to sell it! tongue out

I wouldn't accept the car if it was brand new and would as for another, f it's an MOT fail then simply don't accept it as it's not roadworthy.

I've had two screens replaced before and the first one was bodged and the car was never the same again, ended up scrapping it.

Second car I had the screen replaced it wasn't genuine but the installer did a good job and haven't noticed any difference to the original so it's a gamble I wouldn't be prepared to take especially with the amount of electronic modules now contained within.

I would definitely get Audi to replace it, rather than anyone else.

Push for them to collect / drop off the vehicle and sort you out with an equivalent hire car in the mean time (again, dropped off and collected).

Sorry mate but most dealerships don’t replace screens. They call in experts to do it, people whose job day in day out is to replace screens. Just like they don’t fit tyres, they get a tyre fitter to do it.

You want a proper job done by an expert, get someone who does nothing but screen replacements. You know the name of the companies.

Just make sure when you book it that you specify that you want OEM supplied glass not a copy. You usually get OEM anyway but just to make sure.

Get the local Audi place to replace it (they’ll call autoglass to do the work, but they will supply the screen and do any recalibration of cameras).

If you get it in writing that they’ll pay the cost, the local dealership should be able to bill them directly. The only compensation I’d want is a courtesy car and a quick fix.

Coincendentally my Audi is going to Autoglass to have its windscreen replaced next week. They said it has to be done at their premises because of recalibration of cameras etc. Suspect Audi would just send the Q7 to them to do the same.

Compensation claim! You wait till you start getting said vehicle serviced then you'll want to find someone to get something for nothing!

I'd expect them to take the car away replace the windscreen and bring it back again.

I wouldn't expect compensation for it though

The cameras are self-calibrating and will do so within the first few miles of driving again. If you're fitting a non-genuine glass however...

It’s a cracked windscreen...rectified incredibly easily. Take the car get auto glass to replace (easy) either through insurance (£75) or get Audi to cough up.

Take the car, Auto glass it, enjoy and get them to pay the low cost (if you can be bothered to chase)

I’ve had loads to replacement windscreens....no bother

So I took delivery of a new Q7 in April....lovely

It's not rare for a car being delivered to have picked up damage to glass, paint or rubber on its way to you (unless it arrived on a covered trailer). I bought my current van from Birmingham (the service from VW Van Centres in London was poor zzz) and not only did I get a good deal from them they offered to deliver it. I understood that from Birmingham to Barnet would mean some risk but no different to me driving it home. Fortunately, no issues.

Don't know what your claim for compensation would be based on.

This would be the bit that would piss me off - that being said it's not like there are only 6/7 audi dealerships in the whole country.

Out of curiosity just how big is the crack? Bullseye - c'est la vie, happened en route, could've happened to you first time out. Top to bottom? You'd like wonder at their pdi...

I think that asking them to replace the car is a step too far, but certainly asking them to replace the screen is fair. Screens get damaged and many cars get replacements throughout their lives.

I wouldn't accept a brand new car delivered to my house that has damage on it, fair enough if the screen got damaged on my first trip out in it, but not 'before' I'd actually taken ownership of it. It was at their risk delivering it to you, four hours drive away, make them sort it out.

Did the driver keep quiet and hope she wouldn’t see it?

If I'd just taken delivery of a brand new, circa £60k, car I'd be pretty miffed if the windscreen was broken. Yes, new cars often have damage and need a minor repair but it should be sorted by the dealer at their expense and with zero hassle for the customer. I would expect them to collect the car, repair it and deliver it back to you with a small gesture of good will.

I definitely wouldn't get it done by a third party due to the potential for problems (warranty etc) further down the line.
