Looking to replace the family wagon as the kids (3 of them) are starting to outgrow the A4 Avant.

From what I understand neither brand has covered themselves in glory when it comes to reliability but this'll probably be a new purchase so waranties should cover if things go wrong. If I do end up going (lightly) used I'll have to try to negoiate a warranty for my period of ownership, likely to be 3-4 years.

Disco is top of my wish list currently. The 3.0 SDV6 with 306bhp and 700nm is swaying my decision making process here. Had a test drive last weekend and loved it although I was a little let down by cabin ambience. Was a Landmark and think an HSE or HSE Lux is out of budget (unless I go used).

The XC90's all with 2.0 powerplants just seem under engined... on paper. Got a test drive lined up this weekend so will soon find out but I do like the look of the inside of them, especially with the blond leather.

What would you go for and why? Any alternatives I should consider (7 seat SUV)?

I'm in the same boat and have already discounted the Discovery based on not really requiring the off road capability, and having plenty of experience of Land Rover reliability. I'm probably going to end up with the B5 (diesel) XC90 as all the rest don't have quite the same space for the 3rd row, or boot space available when the third row is in use. Rubbish colour choices though.

The T8 looks like it has a bit of poke.

Go for a lightly used Discovery & get the spec you want you can always extend the Manufacturers warranty if you want to keep it longer:

XC90 every time. The disco is just too expensive for what they are, reliability is still dreadful so be prepared to be without it for reasonable amounts of time.

I’m in a similar boat, although looking at older vehicles thought about tdv8 Rangie and discounted it for reliability, and (sigh) wife doesn’t like the XC90.... so looking at Amazon land cruiser and Mercedes GL

I had a 2019 B5(petrol) XC90 as a loan car for 11 days and I thought that it was a wonderful thing(apart from the 24mpg). I thought that it was going to feel gutless with only a puny 2 litre engine, but it was fine to just cruise in. The T8 certainly appeals to me though!

It felt spacious and the ride was fine, plus the cabin had a very nice ambience to it as well. I can understand why they get rave reviews, a great family car I reckon.

This man knows his stuff. Disco every time unless you want an underpowered mock-roader.

I’ve owned Discos for 15 years and they’re fine if you service them well.

Ask yourself would they still be selling cars if they were really that st? They have better reliability than Porsche.

May be worth considering the new Q7; quicker 0-60 than the Disco, you’ll either love or hate the touchscreen interfaces, third row seats are exclusively for under 12s and they leave only hatchback sized boot space once up. However, very good good value via brokers such as Drive the Deal, check their special offers bit (also may be worth calling them as their monthly email always have significantly discounted Discos on it as well).

I’m not affiliated with DTD - I was Just looking for similar cars late last year and used them. I’m sure there are lots of other brokers which will be able to get you good value on these cars.

Thanks for all the replies.

Q7 is a no straight off the bat. Had 3 Audi’s now and fancy a change. I can’t get over the lardy estate car looks either. Shame really as engine/tech/reliability-wise it seems the sensible choice.

T8 doesn’t fit my mileage profile so it’ll either be petrol or diesel XC90 only.

I’ve been pouring over LR approved used website for about a month now and have my eye on one particular 2019 HSE Lux, only done 7k. My biggest dilemma if I do go Disco is do I go for a used higher spec car or a brand new lesser spec one. 3rd world problems, huh.

When I bought mine I got a low mileage 1 year old model in HSE spec. Any teething issues sorted under warranty, big chunk in depreciation saved and still essentially a new car.

Reliability not a concern because of the warranty... that’s fine until you’re stranded 200 miles from home on a rainy Sunday night, or tight on time for a run to the airport to go on that really pricey holiday.

High spec all the way. Can't beat the heated steering wheel in winter biggrin

I've just handed back an XC90 after completing a 2 year lease, it was a diesel R-Design Pro - I can't fault the car in the slightest, it was excellent.
Don't worry about the puny sounding 2 litre engine, it was fantastic too and putting it into "dynamic mode" gave it a bit more grunt when required

If they added a rotary control akin to i-Drive on a BMW it would have been even better to drive

We previously had a Discovery 4 Landmark ( my wife preferred it to the Volvo) we looked at the new Discovery but it was a big let down on the Disco4 - less usable space in boot - ( we have to carry a very large 15 stone St Bernard, so boot needs height as well as floor space) the Volvo beat the new Disco hands down on that, build quality, customer service and more importantly price.

Currently struggling to decide what to replace the Volvo with, no rush as working from home currently and cars with that amount of space are few and far between and tend to be expensive - may end up with another XC90

As someone above mentioned, unless you really need the superior off road ability of the Discovery I’d be looking at the Volvo.

It’s far nicer inside.

As someone who has owned nine Land Rovers from Series through to Range Rovers and I'm sure I will have another at some point. For day to day use I would probably go for the Volvo...

Discovery is fine if you don't mind rolling the dice with snapping a crank.......

I get that it's still a fairly small % that do, but it's well enough documented that JLR should really have a better policy regarding replacements IMHO

Probably because they have shocking reliability and patchy dealers

Out of those 2 get the Volvo

Also I’d expect the residuals to be better on the Volvo

Interested to hear your experiences, have you ever owned one or are you spouting the usual misinformed, stereotypical response?

They have a better reliability score than Porsche yet nobody rubbishes those.
