What fund / tracker
Discussion
I've just opened a Investment ISA with Barclays Smart Investor I had to use them as my employer requires me to, I don't know if this makes any difference to what's available to me in terms of funds / trackers ? Anyway I am looking long term here 10-15yrs, I have 20k I can put in now, I'm not interested in individual stocks (been there done that lost a lot) so I am looking at funds or trackers, anyone recommend funds, I'm not adverse to put some in high risk but majority I would like in some mid risk funds ? Ideally I want to try and make some money off the fact the markets are down due to covid. Also how does it work on ftse100 trackers do different fund providers provide these or should I expect Barclays Smart Investor to have 1 ftse 100 tracker product they offer ? If there is multiple ftse100 trackers I could pick from is the differentiating factor between them the fees as they all track the same index ?
thanks
thanks

What is the reason you have to use what your employer says for ISA saving ?thanks
First decision to make is whether you want to go passive or actively managed, and if you think the fees premium for actively managed is worth it.
Many funds will try and talk up their past performance, but as the saying goes that's no guarantee of future results.
IANAFA etc etc

Trying to pick funds is similar to picking stocks, you're gambling and asserting that you know better than the broader market. IMO you're better off just getting the broadest and cheapest equity exposure you can. https://monevator.com/why-a-total-world-equity-ind...Many funds will try and talk up their past performance, but as the saying goes that's no guarantee of future results.

Are you saying that your employer doesn't allow you to open up an ISA with any other institution?
Barclays will charge you 0.2% as well as the fund charge so you could be paying 0.9% upwards. You can do better for a simple tracker.
Yeap can only use Barclays, I work in financial services (not for Barclays) and they need to see what I buy and sell is not on restricted list / I hold positions for 30 days etc, Barclays have some kind of feed to my employer, I've seen a couple of people lose jobs due to non compliance, normal cash ISA I I can have anywhere, are Barclays fees that bad then? Thought a FTSE tracker was about 0.1%?

Well no, 0.2% aren't the highest charges by a long way. If you are stuck with using Barclays then you just need to be careful with the funds you select. You'd have to question why a well performing fund like Fundsmith isn't included in the Barclays fund list though.Strange they say you can only use Barclays, are you sure this is the only option. I also work in financial services and subject to similar conditions where I cannot trade blacklisted (AML, Sanctions etc) firms or those where it would create a conflict of interest but had no issues with having a HL and Vanguard S&S ISA. I submit quarterly statements so they can see exactly what I am buying/selling and frequency.

I would go with Fundsmith, and Lindsell Train Global Equity. Great returns over many years, and quickly recovered from Covid falls.
+1 These two have served me well and seem to have more or less recovered from CoVid.
I have read articles that say that they are the right choice for low growth or falling markets but that you are better off with other funds for up-cycles.
I guess that the best advice that I can give is to choose as many funds as possible. You may lose out on the highest gains but you won't lose all your money to something like Woodford.

At that point mightn't you as well save the management fees of active funds and just put it all in vwrp or some other very broad index tracker ?I find this useful as you can search all thr available ke funds by different periods of time (from 1 month to 5 years) and it tells you thr returns over that period;

I’m also in FS. I can only use 2 Brokers for share trading - usually it’s due to compliance having automated feeds set up from certain Brokers. It’s a PITA as I want to use a wealth banking account, but I can’t because they give you share trading capabilities and they aren’t on the list...Gassing Station | Finance | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
