BMW X5 2010 3.0 M Sport

Hi I'm looking at a local BMW X5 for sale. After speaking to the friendly chap today over the phone he admitted that the car was in the garage, it had shown a fault for the rear air suspension I think he said. As he wanted this fixed he put it in the garage but the garage are saying the fault code has disappeared so they are keeping it overnight etc. The bloke seemed really open and honest and said he totally understood if this put me off but he said if there is an issue he will get it fixed or knock the bill off the price of the car. I just wondered what people's thoughts are on this? I think at least if there was a definite problem then at least it would be getting fixed but I'm obviously more concerned if the garage say there is nothing wrong, which leaves a question mark about it raising it's head. Is this likely to be big money if there is something wrong?

Most likely it is rear air suspension airbag leak. New airbags are c£200 (pair) aftermarket + about 2 hours labour to replace. Most X5, 7er, 6GT have them replaced at around 8-10 years of use. Nothing serious. If airbag is leaky, parked car will drop down, usually on one side. When started up it would rise in about half a minute time, depending on the hole.

Also it could be suspension compressor on the way out, this might be more expensive.

Thanks for the reply, that doesn't sound too bad, that was my worry about the compressor. Does anyone have any advice of what I should be checking when I look at the car tomorrow?

I owned a 2010 3.0 and went on holiday where we suffered a battery fault, it was recovered by BMW (it was an AUC car with warranty). We travelled home the next day in our Nissan X Trail courtesy car to receive a call from the dealer to say overnight one of the rear airbags had given out and it was loo sided

So the point I am getting at is they can just ‘go’ like that especially as the car gets older. Plenty of aftermarket kits suppliers out there for the various component parts of the system.

If the bag has failed or leaked it will be very obvious when you go to view.

Well I decided to take a punt on it. Car needs a good clean, air con hopefully just needs a re-gas and few little stone chips but other than that I'm really happy with it so far.
