Opinions would be appreciated. Daughter is 23 and has Mk6 Golf R. She's looking to change to a 4x4 (for towing a horsebox and more space for horsey stuff). She's insured on our disco 4, cayman, 997 and T5 transporter so no issues with size of vehicle (and just £40 to add her to the 997!) and although she loves the pace of the golf she can get her fix from one of the porsches if the mood takes.

Looking to spend £15k to £20ishK. V6D in plentiful supply. V8D less so and a bit more expensive. I've only driven the V8D and liked the pace and sound so leaning that way if we can find a decent one in budget (would be likely private on that basis).

Any real world experience would be gratefully received. Third world problems and all that for a 23 year old but it's a car she'll likely have for a long time so want to get it right if possible.

As a workhorse, general practical do all car the V6 is the better bet, better fuel consumption, more choice, plenty quick enough and likely cheaper parts for the V6 against V8.
I've had both and would prefer the V8 all day long but at the lower end of the market I suspect you'll end up with a better car age/mileage/condition wise.

Thanks Crazy. Makes a lot of sense.

From a Golf R, at that age, I would have thought the Macan would be a cooler choice, but assume prices are still too expensive.

Otherwise, probably better to buy a newer, lower miles V6D than an older, higher mls V8D.

Spec us obviously a consideration though, and some V6Ds may be fairly basic, whereas the V8Ds might have more options.

From my experience of Diesel Cayennes and Macans the engines are all very sweet, with nice power delivery and excellent 30-40 mpg economy. V8 obviously faster but goes through tyres and brakes more quickly

Thanks Koln. The Macan doesn't have the towing capacity we'd need - plus beyond what she'd want to spend (i'll chuck in the extra and probably won't get it back!)

+1 agree with Crazy4557

I've had both and still got the V8d. Lots more choice of V6d at that price range. Only downside is both (IMO) need the Porsche warranty - I had the V6d for about 4yrs and 60-70k miles and used the (extended) warranty enough times to pay for itself. Engine out, new gearbox etc. Had the V8d for nearly 2yrs and 20k miles and already had transfer box replaced (common problem - I know people that have had it replaced twice).

In short, great cars. Different to drive than a Range/Land Rover. I also have a VW Amarok and will probably have to buy a horse box in the near future (got the pony etc.. now daughter wanting to go out and about rolleyes ) and IMO the Amarok will be a better vehicle than the Cayenne for this job.

The Cayenne at that age and price bracket could possibly require deep pockets. Or you might be extremely fortunate smile
