981 Spyder Values
Discussion
Interested in hearing thoughts on where the value of the 981 spyder may be heading, I’m tempted to get one would would prefer not to throw another significant amount down the drain.
May consider a 987 spyder again but ultimately preferred my gt4’s (981 shape) sound and poke and fancy this without a roof!
Cheers

I've been following the market for a while, and have a decent idea of current values I think, having bought a 981 Spyder on Friday.
Factors in the current market seem to be:
- the summer seasonality as ever
- a few more becoming available as 718 Spyder trade-ins
- mildly negative (or at least not 100% uniformly raving) reviews re the 718 Spyder around noise, weight, plastics, "shall I wait for PDK?", etc.
- some excessive prices on flipped 718 Spyders, and some specifications on those flipped cars arguably put together whilst on hallucinogenic drugs
- a very hot used Porsche market since lockdown, with a sense of people "living for the moment" and with car touring holidays in mind given flying holiday difficulties. Word is that the recent market for top/limited road cars has been slightly better than for GT, perhaps owing to the loss of the first half of the track season
- a bit of a buzz around Spyder models on the back of Speedster/718 Spyder
- a realization that the 981 Spyder is quite an exclusive car, esp. relative to 981 GT4, and was a hen's tooth car in 2015/16 with many still needing to scratch the itch/erase the memory of not getting an allocation
I'm still convinced (sufficiently to pitch into the market yesterday) that this is a low depreciation bet on a good car, which has been looked after, and with a full, coherent spec.
And independent of value they're darned good cars - for me the best bits of 981 GT4 and 991.2 911 Convertible all in one.
There's enough people on PH who get through many cars who seem to hold onto their 981 Spyders a bit longer than some other cars. I appreciate that there's deep love for the 987 Spyder but I don't think that's the question here. I suspect that both will be looked back on as a sweet spot before tech/emissions control/bloatedness and in total across both 987/981 there's still not that many UK cars, especially those now with good history and spec.
But everyone will have their own opinion.

Can't see them dropping below £60K as the floor will be set by the 987 Spyder at £45K..Only 228 were registered in the UK which makes it a very rare car..
One sold by a specialist for just under £60k during lockdown...I was amazed but that’s what happened...was an SoR car that was advertised for a bit over £60k. Cheib said:

987.2 will over take 981 values imho, plus less than 100 manuals In The UK now.Lhd 987.2 German cars cost far more than rhd cars.
We have seen nice spec 981 for £62k with buckets so that’s the benchmark atm, yellow one sold less and comforts will again be less.
If the op had a GT4 don't expect a 981 to be anything like as good.
Great cars at lower price point, I would buy at 55k but would 435bhp it and drop to 19” wheels.

Decent spec mileage and max 2 owner 65 plate cars will be early to mid £60ks depending on season for quite a time imo.[/quote
Not seen any. If you do, please let me know as I’m looking..
Been loads ! Jzm was the car at £62k with buckets, yellow ones sub 60k been 2 and there is a nice white one up at £64k atm Not seen any. If you do, please let me know as I’m looking..
The simple answer is that no one knows,
Each model has its fans , and each model is special for different reasons. for me the 981 is the better Spyder , but that is not a fact , it is just my opinion.
someone else will be along soon with the opposite view.
If was simply a case of 987 came first , its the original etc , then there would be an argument for the Cayman R to be more expensive than the GT4 ?
As it happens I've had a Cayman R , and wouldn't say never to having another , but i've got no love for the GT4 .
But that doesn't make the R a better car , it just makes it a better car for me !!
