Hopefully a fairly easy one.

I currently have Sky broadband, the signal is fine throughout the house, but doesn’t reach far down the garden.

I’m getting a summerhouse for the bottom of the garden, so plan running a network cable down to it to attach a secondary router/hub to.

Can i make it so it has the same name and password as the house system so you don’t have to connect to the 2 routers separately?

Also what do I need to buy, i’ve got the cable so just need to know what device is best to plug in at the other end!

Thanks

A wireless access point is all you need. And yes you can set the SSID and password the same as the main house router.

Something along the lines of this

I'd run a couple of cables down there (just in case one breaks).

Maybe put a little switch in if you're planning to say work from there (so you can plug in printers/laptops etc.

Then install one of these :

You may even find that installing that in the house takes care of your WiFi issues down in the garden (might be worth testing)

Ideally for ease I'd install one in the house anyway and then you can use the same SSID in both areas.

We use a similar setup (with sky broadband/sky q) and we have the sky WiFi switched off completely) as the Sky Q boxes are hardwired

A long range transmitter seems a bit overkill when in all likelyhood the OP is going to be sitting a couple of metres from the access point anyway.

If the OP hadn’t already bought the cable, I would have suggested not to bother and just to use a set of powerline adapters with a Wi-fi unit at the remote end. It’s what we use for our summerhouse and it’s great for general browsing, watching Netflix on the iPad, etc.

I was struggling to get signals in a few rooms, tried all sorts of power line and WiFi extenders but gave up on them all, got myself a Ubiquiti Networks UAP-LR AP it’s like WiFi should always be, fast, long range and has a blue light on it.

I'd opt for the cable option. Just how long is the garden? I've got an old 193x ex council place and my shed sits 30 yards from the house. I looked at the options for supplying power and opted for a cable run on the fence. Visible so it could not be hit. Perhaps something like that might work- 2" pipe fixed and painted to match, or a 2" pipe dug in, (with a drawrope) might be the answer. Years ago I had a customer who wanted CAT5 services to an outhouse near to his house. I did it on condition that I only gave a six months guarantee on cable and it was done against my advice. Years later I never had a return call. Cost of a drum of cat 5??????????.

Run a wire and you can use any old wifi router for the wifi bit. Given as they come free with every new internet sub you can find one in the trash or buy a new one from ebay for £2.

I have a 100m run of Ubiquiti Toughcable Pro to my summer house along a fence, some of it in direct sunlight. Just replaced (from the same 300m reel) after 8 years. Ubiquiti outdoor AP on the other end

OP you don't need £100 Ubiquiti APs for a summer house! Just lay a cable and connect a £20 access point.
I agree with this, your not running an office with a dozen people working in it.
I have a workshop down the end of rhe garden and ran a network cable to it. I use a travel router which works brilliantly:
