What used SUV to buy?

In starting a new job in September and am looking at cars for the commute. Needs to be an SUV as we’ve got a difficult driveway which will scrape any low nose.

Up to £15k budget, need something auto, fast(ish) and 30mpg plus.

Anything obvious that I’ve missed? I’ve looked at Q5, X5, Volvo XC60, RX450. Help appreciated!

What is your drive a sheer cliff face?

Just avoid a "sporty" appearance car and most will have no issues with the driveway

Have you considered thinking out of the box - instead of having to change cars to get over the driveway issue instead you could invest £ into fixing the driveway properly so it’s suitable to all vehicles. This option will certainly add to its sell ability/desirability if and whenever you do sell.

All the following are the 3-litre diesel variants:

Q7 drives quite car-like. It's a bit stiff but has the ground clearance you want. Bigger tyred versions wear quickly on the front. Boot space seriously compromised with third row of seats up which are only really any good for kids. As big as a GL outside (slightly wider, in fact) but not as big inside.

X5 is a better drive all round but only *usually* has two rows of seats. I've actually driven a couple of petrol V8s too which were very fun but quite thirsty.

ML is more truck like - slower steering and feels heavier (it is, slightly). Surprisingly good off road with the right tyres. ML55 was hilariously fast.

GL has a very high spec, is biggest inside, useful boot with third row in place and third row is big enough for adults. Air sprung, height adjustable suspension. Diff lockers in the centre and rear. Low range. Some have under body protection.

XC90 is a low cost version of the GL. Less power but surprisingly useable third row. Excellent in snow with the right tyres.

Range Rover L322. 3-litre diesel not powerful enough. V8 diesel fantastic. Supercharged V8 petrol amazing but very very thirsty. These are as cheap as chips now and still look amazing in any car park. Air sprung with the best off road options. I have a GL but secretly love these.

Very hard to look past the QX50 fit & finish is right up there as well as killer spec with the 3.0d has a nice amount of go too, also due to the lack of badge recognition makes them a great buy at the moment.

It's harder to find a well spec'd mid size SUV with a decent amount of poke but as you can see there are still some nice options out there.

I've been a passenger in a Q5 and I can't recall a single thing about it other than that it was the most anodyne, boring, unremarkable vehicle.

I've owned a Touareg and whilst it was a decent enough car (I had the Hybrid, with the S5 engine up front) it was very car-like and not very SUV-like.

I'm on my second L322 and yes, this one is the 5.0 S/C. To the poster above who said "very very thirsty" - what do you call thirsty, and compared to what? For a 3-tonne, >500bhp house brick, I can live with a regular 22mpg.

If you're getting 22mpg you must be driving Miss Daisy. There are two in our car park and they both average mid/high teens - more on a motorway run of course.

What does the 13% next to the fuel gauge mean? Surely with 22 miles on the range computer it can't be 13% fuel left?
