Which Volante - COVID edition!
Discussion
2020 revival of the decade-old question - which Volante: V8 Vantage or DB9?
To put it into context I'm a bit of a hoarder. The AM would be to replace a SAAB 93 V6 Cabriolet and bring the stable under the same flag. There's an S3 Turbo Esprit, a Silver Seraph, a 111R Elise and an Autobiography - all keepers, all RHDs, and all expats who are now living in Europe on German plates.
Maybe time for a last pre-Brexit steal?
Needs to be a droptop to replace the SAAB; kids are not in tow so a 2 seater is fine. Initially preferred the looks of the Vantage but the DB9 is perhaps the more elegant choice in the metal?
Drove the 4.3l Vantage about 12 months ago but was disappointed. Guess anything will feel heavy compared to the Elise. Am imagining the 4.7 will help a bit; but at that point what's the point of compromise, for handling I have the Lotii and why should an Aston have to compete?
DB9s also seem better value - Vantage 4.7 manual prices are way up there. There's also the question of owner-churn - I prefer my cars high-mileage low-owner, and Vantages from a decade ago seem to have all gone through 5 owners whereas DB9s can be had with 2 or 3.
Sounds like I've convinced myself already but haven't had the chance to drive anything given the border situation and I'm wary of going for another tank. There's already the Seraph & the Rover & that's already plenty old man for a late 70s Gen-X!

There’s only one Volante, the Vantage being a Roadster. There, easy, sorted for you! 😀
Apart from the obvious 2 + 2 configuration of the DB9, the Vantage is more of a sportscar whereas the DB9 is more of a GT.
You want to drive fast in the Vantage, the DB9 is more suited to a relaxed driving style,

Personally I would say is the DB9 is a quicker faster and sportier than the 4.2 v8v .
The V12 in the DB9 is way better than the slow 4.2 v8v and sounds fantastic, i would definitely recommended a DB9.
My DB9 is a beast and just wants to go, i spend most of my time trying to slow her down.

You seek;
More performance than a 4.3
Few previous owners
RHD
There is what might be your ideal car available, and one which has been cared for by two forum members.

We have had 4.3 and 4.7V8V’s and a DB9 Volante before the one advertised above and our current V12VSRs. I would go with the V8V being the sportier car and the 4.7 is a big improvement on the 4.3 but it does lose the great sound of the 4.3 but is still better than the DB9V, which I found to be quite quiet compared with the Vantages. Performance wise I doubt there is not a great deal in it on the open road. Best recommendation is test drive both and see what which one you like best.
