S Insurance

Looking at something like this:

How much would you estimate insurance to be for a 17 year old?
And what sort of reduction would you expect from that when 18 is reached and there is a year of no claims?
Any very rough guidelines on servicing/maintenance here would also be very much appreciated, but i've had a look on people's profiles and have a rough idea..

Yeah would place a bet on it being over 1k definately! We talking 1500 or more, even over 1750?

The real thing is - how much to maintain/service on average.. 1500 would be manageable for the insurance... but the servicing and maintenance could sway it a lot..

To be honest you're dreaming if you think you can get insurance for £1500 when you're 17. Try getting insurance for a 1.2 Corsa for under £1k, let alone a Group 20 car.

IF you can get insurance for that much at 17 give me their number!! Believe me I know about insuring TVRs and being young. I got my S3 at 21, and already had 5 years NCB and it cost me £1500 p/a and that was in a lump sum. It was £2100 in monthly installments. Admittedly that was parked in the street in Newcastle, but when I renewed I was 23 with 7 years NCB and parked in a garage in Surrey locked it was £1000. Getting insurance at your age could be the issue, I still only have the choice of Tesco and Elephant for me at 24 with 8 years NCB. I was recently quoted £3500+ by Swinton and that's around the same for anybody else. People such as Mannings, Sunninghill, Classic Line, Firs t Alternative, Peart and many other common used insurers won't touch me until I'm anywhere between 25 and 35.

IIRC Batty FTO had an S4 when he was 19 and I suspect he paid somting in the region of £2.5K+, I know pwig was paying somthing around that on his Eunos Roadster, when he had it.

Servicing and maintainece is all car dependent but budget on around £500-£1000 or so per year for bits, unless you get a really sorted car. Mine was very good but cost me around that, for bits and bobs and general wear and tear.

Bear in mind that parts can be expensive when they go wrong. When the exhaust on my mini went, wehn I was 17 it was £60. When the S3's went it was around £500 or so , £50 or so for the Throttle Pot, £2-300 for 2 shocks and springs. A new rear screen could cost you £150+.

I'm not trying to put you off, just being realistic. As I now run a Griff the runnign costs are now just hitting home and I am realising that it could potentially be a very high cost. We're not talking Porsche/Ferrari costs, but unless you are a 17 year old who has very well off parents who don't mind funding your car, or a very good job, you could end up in a sticky situation.

My advice to you would be to either:

Get a mini/beetle which you can modify and make fast.

Get a kit car as insurance is pretty reasonable for these.

Well, I will be looking out for quotes soon, I have found a classic car quote for a V8S '94 Reg that is £1604 pa for a 21 year old... not bad!

I will be doing a lot of research, and if possible will be getting a TVR.. that would be the number one choice even if it meant eating stale bread for 10 months of the year Also, it would probably be much better to drive than the 1.2 Corsa

There isn't much of a difference at 21 between £1600 for a V8S and £1193 for a Tasmin 200
We'll see...

Bear in minid that V8 running costs are a lot more than the V6. Not just in fuel, serviving, parts etc.

Just out of interest who quoted you on a the V8S?? I couldn't find anyone to quote me on clasic insurance until I'm 25. I have insurance for the Griff coiming up soon and could really do with going the classic route if I can.

I don't think the insurance on the V8 and V6 are too different, but 21 and 17 are pretty far apart. If you are set on the S I would go with a good V6 as the engines and drive train is rock solid. Not that there RV8s are bad but I reckon the V6s are better for reliability. They are straight out of a Grnanda after all, and they go for ever. A friend has one (Granada) with somthing like 200K on the clock and it's still going.

Absolutely no idea I'm afraid, but if you ring a chap called SImon on 01278 427 127 and tell him the brother of the guy that bought his Griff suggested you did, he might be able to set you up with a good deal. Cracking deal on my soon to be picked up V8S and brothers Griff; V8S is looking like it will cost me less than the S3C did..

I paid £2200 for my first year of insurance, I was 32 but had no, no-claims bonus.....

You won't be able to get insurance for any TVR at 17... unless you are a named driver on mum or dads policy...

have you tried www.elephant.co.uk When I first bought my S2 I was 20 and elephant quoted me £1650. Its not bad, worth a try.

The other alternative is to get your parents to insure the car and have you a named driver on the insurance that might be cheaper.

Might not be applicable at 17 but Norwich Union were easily the cheapest for me (at 28).
