Before I start this post, this isn't a woe is me looking for sympathy post, I know there's loads of people in the same position but it's just weird for me

Company I worked for has decided they can do without a stock controller in their warehouse so have decided to make the role redundant and me along with it (at time of writing I've got one meeting left in consultation period which will be to outline redundancy terms as they want to tie it all up today (30th June; I'll also add that they initially said they were only proposing to remove the role so I presented a business case for keeping the role which they pretty much just ignored)

As such it'll be the first time in 20 years I'm out of employment and not something I'd have expected to experience being only 36 but such is the way things are at the moment

As I said above, not after sympathy more advice on how to cope as I've no idea what to do with myself right now (obviously apply for jobs) as it's completely alien to me

I've got 12+ years of warehouse experience, including supervisory and stock control roles, plus 4 current FLT and one that will need refreshing if anyone knows of anything in the West Mids area, though not sure WHSE work is what I want to do anymore

I'd have thought with the rise of online shopping that warehousing was a growth industry these days. Best of luck with the job search.

OP, as well as the usual routes try sticking something on Twitter, those kind of ‘looking for a job’ posts can get shared round a fair bit and seem by a lot of potential employers.

I am an insurance man and we are seeing more and more logistic properties needing cover which would support your view.

Best of luck OP.

Ask around op, I generally change jobs every three years, every job I have ever landed has been through contacts.
It really isn’t what you know, it’s who you know.

Sorry to hear. As for how to cope I would try keep your day in a set routine, set specific hours out to sit down and search for job, keep active and eat healthy. It can be very easy to slip into bad lifestyle habits when you suddenly have loads of time on your hands. Good luck mate

I wish laugh lot more boring, company basically said they reckoned that having no stock controller wouldn't negatively affect the business too much at the initial stages and are now saying that client demand is dropping medium to long term so don't need my role anymore

I was in the same situation at the end of March. My boss panicked, and made us all redundant. I took the view that I was better to grab any job as quickly as possible rather than be in the bun fight when furlough ends, as I think there will be many people in the same boat (they just don't know it yet)

My only advise would be not to discount anything. The job I applied for and eventually took was over 7k a year less, but what I hadn't factored in originally was the shift enhancements etc. It turns out my take home is on a par with my old job, with more time off. I also have the ability to earn extra with overtime.

Just don't discount anything.

If you've got kids become a ''self employed'' cupcake maker or kids party face painter and claim you're working 16 hours a week and earning the equivalent of minimum wage (it doesn't matter if in reality you're not actually working/earning at all)... then just sit back and watch the Tax Credits role in.

It seems to work just fine for the people who know how to game the system along these lines.

With 20 years service you'll get quite a good redundancy package as well as pay in lieu of notice and holiday pay. You could use some to retrain whilst looking for another job.
When I was a similar age to you I took voluntary redundancy, got a years pay as the package, and then went into a totally different career which I loved.
