New Driver Car Choice?

I bought my eldest a Pug 206 1.4 16v Sport as his first car and its been good as gold for four years. Now number two son is learning in it and I want to get him a motor.
Decent 206s (ours is superb) are thin on the ground, so I figured I would go for the 207 1.4 16v Sport, which are more plentiful. Weirdly these 1360cc twin cams are cheaper to insure than the diesels despite being three insurance groups higher and a mighty 20 bhp more powerful.
So the point of this post is does anyone have any other cheap sporty(ish) cars that would be ideal for a young lad's first motor?
For comparison the insurance aged 17 with no NCB and a freshly minted full licence is circa £900 fully comp for a year.

Insurance quotes are unfathomable. My son having just past his test, got cheaper insurance moving to Glasgow city centre from rural Borders. Where did you get £900 from? Ours was £1200 for a 107, anything more than 1.0 was nearer £2k.
Location is everything when looking at insurance.
We paid about £900 on my 18 year old daughter's insurance 2 years ago on a 206 1.4.

Think it will go up quite a lot when my 17 year old passes her test.

Sadly it was wriiten off 2 weeks ago by a delivery driver
and is almost impossible to replace as its a Ghia and insurance co are not paying enough to buy the same age and spec car

she is mostly concerned with colour, has to be purple or blue. We pick up a Mazda 2 in metallic purple on saturday. Drove it, its a really nice car, nearly as good handling as the Fiesta, slightly more power, slightly less mass, but odd gearing 1st to 2nd. It cost more but is newer with less mileage. Insurance - she is 19 with 2yrs ncb is £400 ish
