My wife has a fire tablet, it has the worst sound imaginable. I'm not an audiophile, anything comparable to an echo dot is fine.
If it's a plug in will it shut off the tablet speaker? That would be good
If it's WiFi will it shut off the tablet speaker? Also good
I would like one that has it's own volume control.

Small is good.....any recommendations

If you just want something simple, good value and with the bonus of 2 speakers for proper stereo seperation, the Creative Pebble speakers are very good.

They're around £20-25 on Amazon ( link )

I used them for my desk computer - what I liked was that they were small, had no bluetooth / voice assistant or anything - just a simple 'plug them in' 3.5mm cable (like headphones) and they are powered by any standard USB charger or USB socket... Also not too boomy / bass heavy which seems to be the fashion for small speakers at the moment but a pretty good sound for the money.

Disadvantage maybe that they are wired - one for the 3.5mm input, one to power them, one from the right to left speaker. Not a problem if they are on a desk and you don't need to move them around from place to place all the time.

If I use them on an Echo Dot or iPad, the 3.5mm input overides the built in speaker in both cases. Sorry... edit.... they also have their own volume control.

Have a look at the Anker Soundcore range:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01MTB55WH

Rechargeable battery, you can connect either via 3.5mm jack or pair via Bluetooth.

Another for the Anker
Often around £20 on Amazon
Nice sound, the battery lasts forever!
Great bit of kit for the price
