Road Tax Issue?

Sorry if wrong place to post.
I bought a car from a dealer back in May, dealer said he would put V5 in my name doing it online, I then paid for the road tax while he done that. Bit of a long story but car is being returned to the dealer today as not fit for purpose.
I have not received the V5, I put this down to the DVLA being busy with back logs etc but managed to speak to someone who said they have not received anything to say the car has changed owners and if done online they would see this. So car is still in dealers name which I guess is good for him as I will have never have been an owner.
However when trying to get to cancel road tax I need the V5 ref no. Does anybody know any other way around this? Not quite sure how I managed to pay for it if the car wasn't in my name but can quote recall the process as I was paying for the car, sorting insurance etc at the same time.
